Boehner Can't Whip GOP 'Asses in Line' (The Nation)

The Nation -- President Obama says he has held substantial talks with House Speaker John Boehner about raising the debt ceiling, and the Democratic president suggests that he has felt at numerous turns as if he and the Republican speaker were on the verge doing a deal.

But the deal never quite happens.

It?s not that Boehner is a bait-and-switch artist, teasing the president along and then substituting a new plan at the last minute. In fact, there?s nothing Boehner would like better than to cut the deal with Obama and get back to the golf course.

Boehner?s fight isn?t with the president.

It is with his own caucus, and with a Republican base that is prepared to punish anyone who makes nice with Obama. And Thursday night?s decisions to delay scheduled House votes on Boehner?s plan to temporarily raise the debt ceiling in return for deep spending cuts suggests that the extremists have the upper hand.

The trouble, as has become all too evident, is that Boehner has never been fully in charge of the House Republican Caucus. As Obama explains?accurately, if not beneficially for the Speaker: ?I think Speaker Boehner has been very sincere about trying to do something big. I think he?d like to do something big. His politics within his caucus are very difficult?you?re right. And this is part of the problem with a political process where folks are rewarded for saying irresponsible things to win elections or obtain short-term political gain, when we actually are in a position to try to do something hard we haven?t always laid the groundwork for.?

Yes, yes, of course, House Speakers are supposed to be the bosses of the chamber. But, even by the unusually low standards that are going to apply when it comes to early-twenty-first-century Republican House Speakers?two words: Denny Hastert?Boehner is going to rate as a footnote.

Boehner is a placeholder Speaker. He did not climb the leadership ladder with his style or strength. He did so by hanging around, collecting the checks and maintaining the pay-to-play machine in a manner that generally satisfied Wall Street and rank-and-file members. But no one expected anything more than muddling management from Boehner, and now he is struggling to deliver even that.

Pressured by his caucus to fight with the president?rather than accept the overly generous concessions the White House was placed on the table ? Boehner has struggled to come up with his own plan for making enough cuts to satisfy the Republican base while still securing the necessary votes to raise the for debt ceiling by?August 2. But the erstwhile Speaker got the math wrong, earning a bad report from the Congressional Budget Office and squandering whatever confidence he might have hoped to inspire.

Now Boehner is resorting to bluster, announcing on right-wing talk radio that he is telling Republican House members to ?get your asses in line? behind the new plan that he is still trying to cobble together, and that has no chance of winning the approval of the Democrats who control the Senate?let alone the president.

After several days of lining up asses, however, Boehner admitted Thursday that ?we don?t have the votes.?

The Speaker says he?ll get the votes eventually. But the running ?whip list? of GOP House members argues against that fantasy, If House Democrats hold firm, Boehner can afford to lose only twenty-three Republicans. The ?whip list? identifies at 25 members who are opposed (firmly or leaning that way) and 32 more who are uncertain about whether they want to follow the Speaker?s lead.

Translation: Boehner does not have the votes, and he is unlikely to get them for any plan to raise the debt ceiling that does not attract substantial Democratic support.

Unfortunately for the Speaker, it is easier to call for asses to ?get in line? than to make it happen. As the Boehner admits, there are some members of his caucus who prefer ?chaos? to compromise?on the theory that if things get bad enough (think spiking mortgage and credit-card rates, to start) they might be able to force the White House to agree to a balanced budget amendment and other schemes to do away with Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security

But for all Boehner?s bluster, the most prominent member of the caucus Boehner supposedly leads is not budging.

Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, who was rejected earlier this year as a contender for a low-level leadership position in the caucus, is now a top-tier contender for the 2012 Republican presidetial nomination.

Bachmann is the unofficial chair of the GOP?s chaos crisis. She promises to vote against any increase in the debt ceiling?even if that increase comes as part of an agreement that concedes most major issues to the GOP.

?This Republican will not vote to raise the debt ceiling,? says Bachmann. ?My colleagues will have to come to their own conclusion.?

Bachmann may be difficult, but she is not dumb. She knows that the debt ceiling fight is really the first stage of the 2012 Republican presidential contest.

While Boehner may be inclined toward compromise on the debt ceiling issue, the Republican base?ginned up by Rush, Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and various and sundry Fox ?personalities??thinks ?compromise? is a four-letter word.

Standing with Boehner gets Bachmann nothing?especially when another contender, Texas Congressman Ron Paul, is staking out an absolutist stance.

Standing against Boehner scores points with the base. And, going into the Iowa ?Straw Poll??a key test of sentiments among first-caucus-state Republicans?Bachmann is not about to answer the Speaker?s ?get your asses in line? call.

Neither are other Republicans who are thinking about 2012 party primaries for House and Senate seats. These days, the GOP is more of a fight club than a Grand Old Party. And any member who gets his or her ?ass in line? with Boehner might find it tossed out at the next election.

Even as Boehner wrangles caucus members in Washington, Bachmann is roaming around Iowa declaring that the Speaker?s ?premises are wrong.? The grassroots Republicans that she speaks to are cheering Bachmann on.

That?s a big problem for Boehner, because undecided Republicans in the House find themselves faced with a choice between the Speaker?s ?get your asses in line? call and the sweet sound of the base cheering for Bachmann?s absolutism?and chaos.

John McCain Lashes Out at 'Tea Party Hobbits' (ContributorNetwork)

Apparently growing frustrated with the Tea Party element within his own Party, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) took to the Senate floor Wednesday and said their current demands with regard to the debt ceiling debate were "bizarre" and "unfair" to constituents. He read from an Op-Ed piece in the Wall Street Journal wherein the Tea Partyers and those following them were compared to Middle Earth hobbits, a scathing critique of the perceived delusion guiding the movement that its opposition to President Obama and Democratic plans would place the blame for a government shutdown and default on its loans squarely on the Democrats. McCain added that it was "amazing" Republicans would think they could force the issue of a balanced budget amendment in its "present presentation," calling the maneuver "foolish."

"What is really amazing about this is that some members are believing that we can pass a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution in this body with its present representation -- and that is foolish," McCain said on the Senate floor, according to The Hill. "That is worse than foolish. That is deceiving many of our constituents."

Sen. McCain's harsh words came on the heels of reports that Tea Party Republicans were refusing to back the budget deficit reduction plan proposed by Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio). Boehner's plan, which called for a two-part raise in the debt ceiling overseen by a bipartisan committee for recommending spending cuts, was dismissed by many of the more hard-nosed conservatives within the Tea Party movement due to its lack of a balanced budget amendment. A plan passed previously in the Republican-controlled House, nicknamed the "cut, cap, and balance" bill, was defeated in the Senate, which is controlled by a majority of Democratic Party members.

Congress has been at an impasse on the question of raising the debt ceiling for months. Talks between various groups, which included meetings of the bipartisan "gang of six" and other gatherings between Republican and Democratic leaders (including President Obama), have ended in stalemate and ideological gridlock. Several proposals have been made, each with varying degrees of failure.

And while most Americans are calling for a compromise and an end to the talks so a government shutdown can be avoided, many conservatives, most aligned with the no-tax, spend less, smaller government Tea Party politicians, are refusing to compromise on deals that will either increase revenues through changing tax laws or contain only spending cuts.

McCain's statements and the reading from the Wall Street Journal seem clear: Not compromising on the debt ceiling would not leave Republicans blameless for a historic first-ever government default and a likely re-descent into recession. Holding out for a balanced budget amendment, an amendment which McCain said he agreed with, was not the way to go about getting that amendment. There simply was not enough time.

The debt ceiling deadline, a date U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner has maintained will expire Aug. 2 (depending on total revenues taken in but allowing for little leeway in the following days), is the boundary between the U.S. government making good on its debt, services, and contractual obligations and having to shut down all nonessential programs and services, possibly risking default on the government's outstanding debt.

The one thing most legislators agree upon is the debt ceiling must be raised. However, how to go about it seems to be what is in question. The Tea Party believes that by not raising the debt ceiling, a government shutdown will force drastic cuts to government spending and a default will be avoided by simply paying the interest on the debt, then prioritizing which programs and services receive the remainder of the funds taken in by the government's existing revenues.

Prior to his words Wednesday, McCain told the National Review Online that presidential candidate and Tea Party leader Michele Bachmann was "committed... to vote against raising the debt ceiling under any circumstances." He blamed the current debt ceiling on Republican thinking of post-shutdown prioritizing and the ratcheting up of tensions by President Obama's public announcements, such as the possibility that Social Security checks might not go out on time.

McCain seemed to allude to Bachmann again Wednesday.

"There are those that argue somehow in a bizarre fashion," he said from the Senate floor, "that somehow we could prioritize our payments to the most urgent requirements, such as our veterans, such as Social Security."

In the quoted words of the Wall Street Journal Op-Ed, Tea Partyers are "hobbits" fighting the evil President Obama: "The Republican House that failed to raise the debt ceiling would somehow escape all blame. Then Democrats would have no choice but to pass a balanced-budget amendment and reform entitlements, and the tea-party Hobbits could return to Middle Earth having defeated Mordor."

It would appear McCain is letting his fellow Republicans, especially the less-experienced elected officials, know that the current battle over the budget and the debt ceiling is no fantasy -- and the Tea Party and those who would follow its lead would do well to understand that political fact as they go about doing the business of governing.

The MBA's seasonally adjusted index of refinancing applications lost 5.5 percent after a 23.1 percent jump the previous week. The gauge of loan requests for home purchases was down 3.8 percent.

The refinance share of mortgage activity dipped to 69.6 percent of total applications from 70.1 percent the week before.

Source: Tarvaris Jackson in as Seahawks QB (AP)

RENTON, Wash. ? Tarvaris Jackson is in as the Seattle Seahawks next quarterback and Matt Hasselbeck is reportedly looking elsewhere.

A person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press Tuesday that Jackson has agreed to terms with the Seahawks and is expected to sign a contract Friday. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because free agents aren't allowed to sign contracts until Friday.

The Seattle Times first reported Jackson's agreement.

Reports surfaced Tuesday afternoon that the Seahawks told Hasselbeck he was no longer in their future plans. Yahoo! Sports first reported the Hasselbeck decision on Twitter. Hasselbeck and his agent did not return messages left by the AP.

The decision to move on from Hasselbeck contradicted Seattle coach Pete Carroll's pronouncement in January that re-signing Hasselbeck was Seattle's No. 1 priority. The two sides could not reach an agreement before the NFL lockout.

Hasselbeck spent the past 10 seasons in Seattle and for much of that time was the face of the franchise. He took the Seahawks to their only Super Bowl appearance and captained Seattle to five division titles. He leaves as the team's all-time leader in numerous passing categories.

But the signs that Hasselbeck's time in Seattle could be coming to a close started a year ago when the team acquired Charlie Whitehurst from San Diego. Whitehurst was supposed to challenge Hasselbeck for the job before the 2010 season, but his only two starts last season came in games Hasselbeck was injured. One of those starts was the season finale when Seattle beat St. Louis 16-6 to wrap up the NFC West title with a 7-9 record.

Hasselbeck then seemed to affirm his importance to the franchise by leading Seattle to a stunning NFC first-round playoff upset of New Orleans before the Seahawks lost to Chicago in the NFC divisional playoff. After that loss, Carroll said the Seahawks' No. 1 priority was re-signing Hasselbeck.

But it won't be Hasselbeck back under center when the season begins on Sept. 11 at San Francisco.

Whitehurst was one of the first Seahawks to arrive at their training facility on Tuesday morning after catching a late flight back to the Northwest and not getting to his apartment until about 1 a.m. Still, he was driving through the gates of Seahawks headquarters shortly after 8 a.m. ready to pick up his playbook.

"You're more experienced; it goes for all of us. There were a bunch of new guys this past season," Whitehurst said. "I think everybody is probably feeling pretty confident about this season."

Instead of Whitehurst battling Hasselbeck for the starting job, it'll be Jackson. Later in the day, after learning the reports of Hasselbeck's departure, Whitehurst seemed to realize his chance.

"It's as good an opportunity as I'm going to get and I'm looking forward to it," he said.

In Minneapolis, Jackson was ushered aside most of the last two seasons in favor of Brett Favre. Now he'll get a fresh start in Seattle and be reunited with offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, who is in charge of revamping Seattle's passing game. Bevell spent the previous five seasons as Minnesota's offensive coordinator.

Rust might be a problem for Jackson. He's played in just 11 games and started only once the past two seasons after making 17 starts during the 2007 and `08 seasons.

Hasselbeck had been instrumental in organizing offseason workouts for players in the Seattle area and working with the University of Washington on using their facilities. Some players had been extremely outspoken on Twitter in urging the Seahawks to re-sign the veteran QB.

"Gotta say thanks for giving me a chance to get my career rolling," Seahawks receiver Mike Williams wrote to Hasselbeck on Twitter Tuesday afternoon. "U'll always Rep the 12th, see u in the Ring of Honor sir."

Rich Moran, the agent for Seahawks offensive lineman Stacy Andrews, confirmed Tuesday his client has been informed he will be released. Andrews was scheduled to make $5.25 million this season, but was likely to be a backup after Seattle drafted linemen James Carpenter and John Moffitt.

The Seahawks also agreed to terms with 19 undrafted free agents on Tuesday. Highlighting the list was Boise State safety Jeron Johnson, Nebraska safety Rickey Thenarse and Nebraska defensive end Pierre Allen.

HTC exec leaves company for 'personal reasons'

HTC is out a top executive with the departure of chief innovation officer Horace Luke. The exec has been gone for some time now, having exited at the end of April. The Taiwanese phone maker formally announced the news this week, citing "personal reasons" as the motivation behind the CIO's exit. HTC had nothing but kind words for Luke, who had been with the company since 2006, stating that he had "nurtured a culture of innovation." The company's vice president of design, Scott Croyle, has stepped into the Luke's vacant position.

More Kids Eating Calorie-Packed Take-out Food (HealthDay)

TUESDAY, July 26 (HealthDay News) The obesity epidemic is being fueled still further by a growing trend among kids to eat out and bring take-out food home, University of North Carolina researchers say.

Such foods are high in sugar and calories, and their increasing popularity means youngsters are getting more calories than they need, the researchers noted.

Since 1994, this trend has been growing rapidly and reflects the availability of fast food restaurants and foods prepared in supermarkets and other food stores, the researchers say. In fact, calories eaten away from home increased from 23.4 percent to 33.9 percent between 1977 and 2006.

"We found that kids eat a relatively maintained level of calories at home, but in addition kids also eat an increasing number of calories outside the home," said study author Jennifer Poti, from the university's Gillings School of Global Public Health. "Eating outside the home is actually fueling the increased energy intake for kids."

Poti said much of the foods children eat outside the home comes from prepared meals sold in supermarkets and convenience stores, as well as fast food restaurants. Much of the fast food children eat is actually consumed at home, Poti said. In 2006, almost half of the fast foods children ate were eaten at home, she noted.

Although the reasons for this increase in eating prepared meals isn't known, Poti speculates it's a combination of factors including convenience, cost and time pressures.

This trend is adding to the obesity epidemic, Poti said. "Parents need to be interested in both the food source and location where it is eaten, which both significantly influence energy intake," she said.

The report is published in the August issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.

For the study, Poti's team collected data on 29,217 children aged 2 to 18. They had taken part in either Nationwide Food Consumption Survey, the Continuing Survey of Food Intakes by Individuals or one of another two nationally representative surveys of food intake in the United States. These surveys collected data at different times between 1977 to 2006, the study noted.

The researchers found that from 1977 to 2006 the number of calories children got from foods eaten away from home increased significantly. In fact, the percentage of calories children got from fast food was greater than those they got at school.

Samantha Heller, a dietitian, nutritionist, exercise physiologist and clinical nutrition coordinator at the Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital in Derby, Conn., said that "in our fast-paced, time-challenged world, parents are convinced that it is easier and less expensive to eat take-out, fast food and in restaurants."

Unfortunately, these foods are usually high in sodium, fat, sugar and calories, and low in healthy nutrients, she said. "We cannot control where these eateries are located or how they prepare their foods, but we can decide to cook more at home, which will ultimately save money and help keep our families healthy," Heller said.

Although it appears a take-out meal for $4.99 is a great deal, one would actually save money by going to the store buying chicken breasts, vegetables, whole grain pasta, bread and sauce. "You would have a healthy dinner and leftovers for tomorrow's lunch and probably enough left to reinvent dinner by using the remaining ingredients in a salad, frittata or burrito," she added.

"For less than $30, you can buy enough food for several meals including chicken breast, mushrooms, broccoli, pasta, lettuce, bread, eggs, tomato sauce and salad dressing," Heller said.

"A family of four can spend that much easily for just one meal each for take-out and fast food. Planning the week's meals ahead will make home cooking easier, faster, and cost-efficient. More importantly, research suggests that family meals enhance the health and well-being of children on many levels," she said.

"This study is a bit of a wake-up call as to where excess calories are sneaking into children's diets," said Lona Sandon, a spokeswoman with the American Dietetic Association. "More reliance on foods prepared outside the home has led to higher calorie intakes. Eating foods prepared outside of the home has become the norm, not the exception. This makes it more critical to make healthy choices when choosing foods made away from home."

"Also, this study shows that we cannot continue to blame the problem on foods served in the school. Schools have worked hard to change the food environment and offer more healthful choices," Sandon added. "Paying attention to where and what children are eating outside of the school environment is just as important."

Airline shares fall as investors expect fall slowdown (Reuters)

ATLANTA (Reuters) ? Shares of major U.S. airlines fell to one-year lows on Monday on uncertainty over the economy and expectations that travel will slow down in the fall.

"Some of the big airlines are trading close to recessionary levels," said Ray Neidl, a senior aerospace sector specialist with Maxim Group. "The market does look three or four months ahead to the slow fall season."

Among major airlines, Delta Air Lines Inc (DAL.N), Southwest Airlines, AMR Corp's (AMR.N) American Airlines and US Airways Group (LCC.N) hit 52-week lows. Industry leader United Continental Holdings (UAL.N) was down 3.8 percent at $20.06, and the Arca airline index (.XAL) was down 4.7 percent.

The overall market was also lower, and some analysts said airlines were also suffering because of nervousness over the U.S. congressional stalemate ahead of the August 2 deadline for an increase in the United States' borrowing limit.

"If the debt ceiling isn't raised, the airlines will see a substantial rise in interest rates and interest costs, making the firms less valuable," Morningstar analyst Basili Alukos said.

Major U.S. airlines will start reporting earnings this week, with AMR Corp's (AMR.N) American Airlines to disclose on Wednesday.

SkyWest Inc (SKYW.O), a provider of regional flights to big airlines, warned after markets closed on Friday that it expected breakeven results for the second quarter and said results for the rest of the year would probably be markedly lower than it expected. Its stock was down nearly 17 percent at $12.28 in afternoon trading on Monday.

Neidl said he expected strong results from most major U.S. airlines, but he added that carriers were not getting enough fare increases to cover high fuel prices.

Airlines were able to raise fares in the first quarter, Neidl said, but you "saw that slow down dramatically" in the second quarter. Economic uncertainty could make future fare increases difficult and bring discounting this fall, he added.

A new systemwide U.S. fare increase appeared to falter on Monday. Southwest Airlines and American both rolled back initial matches of a domestic rise of up to $10 roundtrip initiated by industry leader United Continental on Friday, according to Rick Seaney, chief executive of FareCompare.com.

"Most of the news that's been coming out has a nervous market getting even more nervous for the market and for the airline sector," Neidl said.

WHO: Blood tests for tuberculosis are unreliable (AP)

GENEVA ? Widely used blood tests to detect tuberculosis are "dangerous" to patients because they are unreliable and can produce wrong results, the World Health Organization warned Sunday.

The U.N. health agency said it will issue an unprecedented recommendation against using such tests for the infectious lung disease that affects some 14 million people worldwide. As much as a third of the world's population is thought to harbor the bacteria that causes TB.

"The tests are not reliable and a waste of money and time, putting proper care at risk," said Mario Raviglione, the director of WHO's Stop TB department.

A review of the tests has shown that they produce too many false negative and false positive, according to WHO.

Raviglione told The Associated Press that the blood tests "are in fact dangerous to patients, since some cases will not be detected and some will be called TB when in fact they do not have it,"

The WHO guidance will be issued later this week. It is the first time that WHO has issued a "negative" policy, specifically counseling against the use of a particular method for diagnosing a disease.

The use of TB blood tests is particularly common in developing countries such as India, where an estimated 3 million people are infected with the disease.

The Lancet medical journal reported in January that some of the blood testing kits used there are made in developed countries where such tests aren't licensed. They are ordered by doctors who receive greater commissions for the blood tests than for the older and more reliable sputum microscopy method, the journal reported.

"Many of these tests are used in the private-for-profit sector, charging poor people who do not understand the lack of value of the test," Raviglione said.

Gaining Muscle Tips

Let?s start off with the myths. One myth that has led others to abandon muscle building is the belief that genetics are all or nothing. If you don?t have the right genes for it, you simply won?t build muscle, let alone get really big. This could simply be just another excuse of someone to just forego trying altogether and is just downright untrue. Genes is just a small part of the equation and this factor can even be trumped by drive and motivation which serve to be determinants more than genetics. If you give up on the excuses and actually train smartly and with discipline, it?s a certainty that you will get the body you desire. Another myth that needs addressing is that you can?t build muscle when you?re older (around 40, up); it?s simply not true. Discipline and wise training, once again, are all it takes to get your body to build as much muscle as you want.

Before you break a sweat in the gym, consider these tips. Jot down your strength training activities by carrying around a handy notebook. Record the exercise, the resistance, the amount of repetitions, the rest periods and the number of minutes you spend in the gym. Doing this will help you keep track of your progress, spot the training areas that are not working for you and easily correct them.

Make compound lifting the focal point of your training. Include deadlifts, leg presses, bench presses, overhead presses, squats, dips, barbell rows, pull ups and chin ups in your weekly sessions. One of the guides you can use to come up with a suitable training program for your body type, including combos, repetitions and rest periods, is The No-Nonsense Muscle Building by Vince Delmonte. Finding the right timing for your body when it comes to resting phases in between lifts and training sessions is vital to your success in muscle building. Want to know how many hours you should spend in the gym and how frequently? How about learning how to time your sessions effectively? Check out Product Reviews at ReviewMOZ.org.

Before you buy any online product, go to ReviewMOZ.org to read Muscle Building Reviews of a wide variety of products. Look at No-Nonsense Muscle Building by Vince Delmonte. marshall - write.click.cook.listen: Tea: A Drink with Jam and Lucy ...

It has taken a while but some people are starting to get it. The general tendency is to view food and music with completely separate lenses as if they are two different endeavors. But in each realm their exists a similar amount of creativity, spontaneity, passion and excitement necessary for a good performance. I've argued, for the last two and a half years, that food and music aren't that different. More and more people are showing signs of agreeing. So who are these people that are starting to "get" it? CSS released a cooking mixtape and included a recipe for cookies with it, M. Ward and Jim James started a creme brulee blog, Frettin For Food has been putting on concerts to benefit the Blount County food pantry, Steve Albini blogs about his Italian cooking experiences, Dekuliner performs culinary blues rock songs and the Vegan Black Metal Chef sings his recipes in a scary way. To the list we now must add English singer-songwriter Lucy Rose. Lucy caught her big break when Scottish music critic Edith Bowman heard an early demo and liked it. This led to gigs with Mumford & Sons, collaborations with Bombay Bicycle Club and eventually to headlining shows that sell out in mere minutes and You Tube videos that reach six figures in views. Lucy's connection with food comes at her live gigs. While the merchandise tables of other bands are crowded with t-shirts, bandannas, pomade and actual albums, Lucy prefers to market her own brand of tea (Builder's Grey pictured above) and jam. The tea sells out at every show. The number of jam units purchased to date is 43. When pressed (asked nicely) for the jam recipe Lucy slyly provided a list of ingredients (ginger, rhubarb, apple, lemon, sugar and fruit pectin) with no measurements or instructions. Gotta protect the merchandise! That's just another reason why she "gets" it. Lucy Rose's first single "Middle of the Bed" will be officially released on August 8th. She will be performing at various festivals throughout the summer (including Belladrum, In the Woods and Bestival).

Human Wasps Build a Giant Nest in New York (LiveScience.com)

NEW YORK ? Some wasps mix wood fibers with their saliva to make paper, from which they construct their delicate nests. Humans can't make paper this way, so when three animal architecture enthusiasts wanted to build their own human-scale wasp nest, they turned to the next best thing: cardboard.

"We can't go around scraping dead wood and park benches, that would have taken several years," said Matty Thompson, one of hosts of the forthcoming TV show "Live Like an Animal."

He and two co-hosts, plus worker wasps they recruited, built the domed structure here over about five days beside the American Museum of Natural History as part of the show in which they replicate animal dwellings and, temporarily, inhabit them. With construction completed, on Friday (July 15) they prepared to begin to live within the structure for three days. [Image of giant nest]

The nest's outer covering of gray-painted, overlapping cardboard layers most closely resembled that of a bald-faced hornet. The insect is a stinging, social wasp that lives throughout North American north of Mexico, said James Carpenter, a curator of invertebrate zoology at the museum and wasp expert who advised during the project.

True to nature, the giant wasps' nest contained many hexagonal cells. In a real nest, these cells would contain eggs and developing wasps. Here, long, white balloons substituted for future wasps.

The hexagonal cells are packed together and suspended in layers.

"That was one of the challenges to overcome," Carpenter said. "The wasps build from the top down. Of course, they can fly."

The human construction process attempted to mimic the natural one to the degree that the outer, cardboard envelope was built top-down, said James Cooper, one of the show's hosts and a future nest inhabitant.

"It was the complete reverse of how you want to build it," he said. There were, of course, human alterations to the structure: The human-scale nest had an interior frame made from metal and wood, materials not in the bald-faced hornet's repertoire. [Nature's Biggest Pests]

The three had previously built and inhabited a beaver's lodge, but this, Thompson said, felt much stranger.

"You can relate to warm blooded-animals," he said. As part of their research, they put a camera into an active wasps' nest. "It did look like an alien spacecraft," he said.

The museum has the world's largest collection of nests built by social wasps, containing about 1,200 specimens, Carpenter said. Most social wasps construct homes from wasp-made paper, while solitary wasps favor burrows.

The audience on Friday contained a few real wasps as well: Several large cicada killer wasps buzzed around. These solitary wasps are longtime residents around the museum ? its collection contains cicada killers collected near the museum in the 1890s. These wasps paralyze cicadas that they later feed to their young, Carpenter said.

"Live Like an Animal" will air early 2012 on the Nat Geo Wild cable TV channel.

College Adviser- Need Help? | Education Reference

Question by The Illusive: College Adviser- Need Help?
What is a college adviser ?suppose? to do. I had a sit down meeting and she basically picked at her teeth while she rough drafted a planning worksheet ? didn?t ask questions, interpret classes, nothing. When i asked her about financial aid her response was second floor. When asked about the difference between two majors in an email she told me to contact career services.

The problem i face is that i would like advice as to what classes i need/should take for summer/fall. I was notified a week 1/2 ago and given a register date. She conveniently was away the week before spring break consequently i contacted another person who could provide assistance per email. I spoke to that person, and they said they would email me the info, waited 2 days, called for followup (said she marked it down for that day), a week goes by, nothing. Then, spring break?? The Monday back from spring break I?ve spoken with a receptionist for advising and she told me that they are not a ?life coach? if that what i was looking for after telling her about my experience. I also talked to a manager of advising and she told me i don?t fall under the majors they handle and i have to work with her. I forgot to mention the Monday back from spring break, she is booked the whole week and the next available is a phone appt (Her email said she would respond in order of receipt when she was away).

So, what should i do now? I need to talk to consequentlymeone that can help in that my scheduled day to register is in a day. Who do i need to talk to consequently that i can work with consequentlymeone else? Also, when i do speak to the right person and make a formal grumblet consequently this doesn?t happen again. Do i mention the receptionist who made the ?life coach? comment and the other lady i talked to who said she would assist me, nonetheless didn?t even after i did a followup??

Answer by Light Cloud
Quite frankly, derived from your description, your college advisor sucks.

Generally speaking, a college has several advisors that each have their own role. For instance, the financial aid department usually handles financial aid and tuition issues. Faculty advisors can usually handle technical questions about the curriculum and/or in their areas of expertise. There?s usually consequentlyme advisor that handles the non-academic aspects of university life, such as dealing with issues in the dorms, and just adjusting to campus life in general.

Finally, there?s the academic advisor, who is responsible for answering questions about the curriculum, courses, and other academic questions (graduation requirements, course roll-out plans, double majors/minors, study abroad, etc). They usually also help students work out academic issues if they are struggling in class, or intend to to drop a class, etc.

However, if your academic advisor is not fulfilling his/her role, you can attempt to work out the curriculum/graduation requirements yourself if they are on the website, and you can also ask the faculty and upper-class students for additional advice.

What do you contemplate? Answer below!

Ecotourism Destination Planning Guidelines (Eagles and Agyeman, 2011)

Ecotourism, with its potential merits as an economic device and conservation tool, has often been adopted for achieving economic, social and ecological sustainability of many systems. It also provides visitors with phenomenal experience with nature and create sustainable livelihoods for local communities to support conservation. However, within some contexts, ecotourism fails to provide equitable distribution of benefits to all stakeholders.

This observed limitation has been attributed to poor planning process and in some cases disenfranchised relevant stakeholders with adverse consequences for the natural resources which form the bases of ecotourism. This supports the argument that ecotourism sometimes carries the seeds of its own problems unless well planned and managed.

Ecotourism is a formidable economic and conservation strategy, however, the planning process is critical to achieving its inherent benefits. This guide serves as a framework for planning ecotourism to facilitate the realization of its potential and generate sustainable benefits for stakeholders. It serves as a compass, directing and guiding ecotourism planners through the various signposts and essential components to achieve successfully planned and developed ecotourism destination.

Building a Strong Relationship 101 | Praise Indy - WTLC AM Indy's ...

Communication Skills Are Necessary for Strong
Relationships. Has anyone ever told you that statement?
Chances are you have heard it more than one time. Do you
know why? Because it is very true. In order to have a great
relationship, especially a marriage, it is going to take
communication. This does not mean communicate only one time
a week. As we continue, we are going to delve deeper into
this category.

In those early relationships, those poor communication
problems will go unnoticed. At this point, the attention
will be pointing towards those physical aspects as well as
emotions.

Have you paid attention to what experts have said lately
about this matter? In order to build a strong relationship
that will last a long time, you will need to talk to your
partner.

It is true that the men of the world have always found it
hard to talk to their partner and there is no denying this.
Yeah, you have some men out there that are great at
communicating, but others are not so great.

Since those prehistoric times, men have been looked at as
being that silent, strong type who is there in order to get
things done. Men believe that they are showing signs of
weakness whenever they express their feelings.

When it comes to women, many of them do not have a problem
with telling everyone how they feel. They wish their men
could be able to be like them and when they are not able to
talk things out, they feel as if they are not appreciated.

In fact, when a woman sees a man that is not able to
express himself, she will not get involved with him.
Whatever you do, as you are in a relationship, you will
need to remember that communication skills are necessary
for strong relationships. Trust and love are also two of
the other very important things.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
?Unfortunately, many people in relationships fail to ask
life?s most important questions prior to getting married.
Many, if not most, of these relationships will end in
divorce. Be sure you ask the right questions and know your
partner as intimately as possible before things get too
serious!?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

To be listened to is, generally speaking, a nearly unique
experience for most people. It is enormously stimulating.

It is small wonder that people who have been demanding all
their lives to be heard so often fall speechless when
confronted with one who gravely agrees to lend an ear.

Man clamors for the freedom to express himself and for
knowing that he counts. But once offered these conditions,
he becomes frigthened.
