Real Estate Related Considerations When Looking To Expand Your ...

No company will ever say no to additional business, especially start-up businesses who would like to expand and generate more income and increase their customer base for their products or services, even if it means relocating to another place. Finding the most appropriate location when expanding your company will greatly affect whether or not your business will continue to flourish.

Finding the perfect spot for your business may take a few tries, especially if your business relies on location, imagery and client loyalty. Lease out short-term commercial spaces with high people traffic and with close proximity to public transportation to maximize your location. Optimal amounts of exposure of your business to the general public will help to spread word and brand identity without much effort on your part.

Another reason for relocating your business is space expansion. If the number of your customers is increasing, it means you will need to hire additional working staff translating to larger space for both.

Find a location that has a little allowance for additional space. Having anticipated space that you can use for future expansions saves you time and money for future relocations. The amount of space available to employees in an office makes an impact on their attitude, efficiency, and the overall atmosphere of the office.

Moving to a bigger and better space also boosts the morale of both employees and yourself. Having a bigger space meant business is growing and more opportunity for the business to grow.

Opposite to that, some companies may need to relocate to a smaller office, either due to declining business, or there simply is just no need for a big unit. The extra dollars spent on large commercial spaces may be used in other components of the business.

Seek the help of commercial real estate agents to make office space hunting, negotiating and transacting easier. Having an expert handle the task will not only remove the burden from your back, you will most likely be able to get the best deals for the best spots for your business. The ideal location for your business could pay for the agent's expertise very quickly and result in extra profit for you to keep or reinvest back into your business.

Whether moving out for expansion, or relocating for downsizing, always make sure that the place you'll move into will be most beneficial and most practical for your company. Never settle on a commercial space with going through a number of spaces available for comparison.

Why we should give remakes a chance

Why we should give remakes a chance

AP

Spike Lee and Martin Scorsese are but two directors who are working on remakes.

We're getting very close to the point where the phrase "Entertainment news" may have to be replaced by "Remake and Reboot News."

How do you feel about that? I've got mixed feelings myself, but I've decided to keep an open mind, even though it isn't always easy.

Martin Scorsese has announced that he's going to direct a remake of the 1974 Karel Reisz drama "The Gambler," starring Leonardo DiCaprio as the gambling-addicted professor originally played by James Caan. And Scorsese's friend and one-time acolyte Spike Lee is directing a remake of South Korean director Park Chan-Wook's ultraviolent 2003 parable "Oldboy," about a man seeking revenge on the people who imprisoned him for years for no clear reason; Josh Brolin, star of "No Country for Old Men" and "W", will play the role first played by Choi Min-Sik. (Although "Oldboy" appears to be proceeding without a hiccup, "The Gambler" remake has awakened the ire of filmmaker James Toback, who wrote the original screenplay based on Fyodor Doestoevsky's short story and on Toback's own life.)

Meanwhile, "The Smurfs" and "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" (which is hugely indebted to 1972's "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes")? are raking in the bucks at your local multiplex. There was also a recent remake of 1982's "Conan the Barbarian"?that tanked. On Sept. 16, writer-director Rod Lurie ("The Contender") will release his?remake of Sam Peckinpah's 1971 revenge thriller "Straw Dogs." Director Tony Scott ("Unstoppable") is working on a remake of Peckinpah's "The Wild Bunch." And there's going to be a new version of "The Thin Man" with Johnny Depp in the William Powell role, written by David Koepp ("Jurassic Park") and directed by Rob Marshall ('Chicago"). There are new "Spider-Man" and "Superman" films coming out, just a few scant years after those properties were already totally remade for the big screen. A long-delayed remake of "Red Dawn" will pit plucky American youth against North Koreans instead of Russians and Cubans. Remakes of "Footloose" (directed by Craig Brewer of "Hustle and Flow") and John Carpenter's "The Thing" are scheduled for October. Will the upcoming remake of "Dirty Dancing" put Baby in a corner?

I'll stop now before your eyes fall out. If you want more of this sort of thing, do a Google search on "movie remake news" and see what pops up, if in fact the search ever stops compiling results.

Remakes have been a part of movies as long as movies have existed, of course, and it's worth pointing out that the remake of John Carpenter's "The Thing" that I mentioned a few sentences ago is in fact a prequel or "origin story", and the third movie go-round for this property; Christian Nyby and Howard Hawks made a movie with the same plot back in 1951, based on the short story "Who Goes There?" And a lot of the projects I listed here are themselves based on properties created in another medium -- novels, comics, plays and so forth. (In case you're wondering, the forthcoming action movie "The Killer Elite" is not a remake of the 1975 Sam Peckinpah movie, it just has the same title.)

So what's the big deal?

Maybe there is no big deal. Remakes are nothing new. We think there are more of them now than ever before, but they've always been a part of the industry dating back to the silent era, and considering how many more theatrical films were made prior to rise of TV, there might actually have been just as many, percentage-wise, in the old days. And they weren't all cynical exercises in box-office exploitation; Alfred Hitchcock and Cecil B. DeMille remade their own movies because they wanted to do them again on a larger scale, or with a different feel.? Scorsese, to name just one of the directors on this list, has done remakes and sequels before. His 1986 film "The Color of Money," which won a best actor Oscar for star Paul Newman, was a sequel to 1961's "The Hustler"; his 1991 remake of "Cape Fear" was his top-grossing film until 2006, when he won an Oscar for directing another remake, "The Departed" (based on the Chinese crime trilogy "Infernal Affairs").

And as I wrote in a Slate Movie Club feature earlier this year, it's important to judge every movie, indeed every work period, on its own terms, and not hold its prior incarnations against it. Some remakes are indeed inferior to the originals, but others are different from but equal to their predecessors -- a great recent example being "Let Me In," writer-director Matt Reeves' American remake of the Danish vampire film "Let the Right One In." To that list I'd add Scorsese's "Cape Fear" remake, Jonathan Demme's 2004 remake of John Frankenheimer's "The Manchurian Candidate," Werner Herzog's remake of Abel Ferrara's "Bad Lieutenant," and David Cronenberg's 1986 "The Fly," which is not only superior to its source, but may in fact be one of the greatest horror movies ever made. (I did slide shows this year listing the best and worst remakes. Hey, maybe I'll remake those lists later this year and see if I can improve them!)

I would, in fact, love to see a smaller percentage of remakes and reboots on screens because there is something singularly exciting about encountering a new story and a new sensibility for the first time, and not having to go through the tedious exercise of listing the ways in which something is equal or inferior to a project that happens to have the same title. Plus, so many of these remakes and reboots are driven by economic imperatives -- it's always a bit easier to get funding for what the industry suits call "a pre-sold property" -- that the whole phenomenon makes it seem as though the American entertainment business is entering a cargo cult phase in which artists aren't producing fresh new work anymore, they're just picking over an increasingly stripped carcass.

All in all, though, I'm not terrifically distressed by any of this. All art should be considered innocent until proved guilty. Even the most seemingly well-pedigreed films can stink like rotten fish, and even the most seemingly cynical and calculated projects can end up being at least interesting, sometimes far more than that. I'm on record urging moviegoers to think about remakes of movies the way they think about covers of songs, as interpretations that can show off an artist's unique personality rather than as innately bankrupt aesthetic photocopies.

I adore Frank Sinatra's "My Way," but I wouldn't trade Sid Vicious' deranged cover for anything.

Trials in Chinese monk self-immolation death (AP)

BEIJING ? The first trial opened Monday in the cases of three Tibetan Buddhist monks charged with murder in western China over the self-immolation death of a colleague in what was described as a political protest.

The March 16 death of Rigzin Phuntsog, 16, was seen by fellow monks and observers as a political protest against China's heavy-handed controls on Tibetan Buddhism and provoked a standoff between security forces and monks.

Authorities accuse two monks, Tsering Tenzin and Tenchum, of plotting, instigating, and assisting in the self-immolation. A third, Drongdru, is accused of moving and hiding the injured monk, preventing him from receiving emergency treatment for 11 hours and eventually leading to his death.

One of the monks went on trial on Monday and two more will follow on Tuesday, a clerk with the Maerkang County People's Court in Sichuan province's Aba prefecture said.

The clerk, who gave only his surname, Zhou, said he did not know which monk went on trial Monday nor how long the trials would last, although the outcomes in such cases are usually predetermined by authorities.

The monastery where the incident occurred, Ngaba Kirti in Sichuan province, is under tight guard by security forces who are accused by pro-Tibetan groups overseas of beating onlookers and detaining monks. The area is off-limits to foreign journalists.

The circumstances surrounding the monk's death remain murky, and in June, China rejected pressure from a U.N. human rights panel to provide information about more than 300 of Kirti's monks whose whereabouts it said are unknown since the monastery was raided in April.

The Foreign Ministry said only that monks were undergoing "legal education" ? a reference to hours-long compulsory political lectures on the basics of the Chinese constitution, criminal law and regulations on religious affairs.

Tibetan monks tend to be fiercely loyal to Tibet's exiled Buddhist leader, the Dalai Lama, who is reviled by Beijing. As custodians of Tibet's Buddhist culture, they tend to be especially concerned about China's tight controls over monasteries that take time away from religious study and practice.

Business School Applications | How To Ace The Interview

For Wharton and many other business schools, you?ll have a choice between conducting your interview far away with an alumni, or on campus with a 2nd year student.

In terms of which type of interviewer is more likely to recommend you, I?d say both are just as likely.

The difference between which type of interview you pick depends on how easily you can fit a trip to the school in your schedule and what you want to get out of the interview.

The interview isn?t just about proving your worth to the school; it?s also about learning whether the school is a good fit for you.

A 2nd year student interview will tell you more about the current student culture. The alumni interview, however, will give you a wider perspective on how an MBA from that school can help you with your career.

To me, the alumni interview was a better choice, because I?m more interested in how a Wharton MBA fits in with my overall career goals.

Aside from campus visits, an alumni interview is one of the best ways of learning whether you want to commit to a particular school.

Face Your Personal Challenges to Achieve Maximum Success ...

Are you an online marketer who is hoping to have a successful business, and are just waiting for the right breakthrough, without thinking that self improvement is the answer? Since most people who come online trying to make money fail, why is it so hard to believe that it is because of lack of self improvement? Improving yourself, in this context, implies working on any inner blocks that impede your success in business. All people have a way of thinking that leads them either on the path of success, or on the path of failure, so the right thinking is imperative to success. This can be done, but that does not imply in any way that it is necessarily easy. Just because you have a website and a marketing plan doesn?t mean that you will find success, without a positive mindset. Without the right self improvement, your business will never become a thriving achievement.

Those that suffer from this type of situation need to ask whether or not these chronic problems will actually allow them to run a successful business. An entire book would have to be written to answer this question properly. Some issues cannot be overcome, but we must always have the attitude that we can conquer all of our problems.

Many people have found that rebuilding self-esteem and overcoming lifelong fears was definitely possible. Many challenges that we face in life can be overcome by simply becoming aware of their presence in our lives. Your success in dealing with your issues will happen if keep a journal of the small victories that you have each day.

No matter what it is that people want to do, the main reason for their lack of success is fear. More things are left undone in this world because of fear. But you will find people who move forward and accomplish their goals even in the face of fear. Being honest with yourself and admitting your fears will go a long ways towards removing them. It is exactly like being able to function even in a state of being afraid. Negative thinking will make things worse, so learn to put positive thoughts into your mind. You may not be able to remove your fears, but you can learn to live with them by focusing on something else Fear doesn?t have to control your life, if you will choose to set your mind on good things.

One of the first things you can do to help save your business is to notice you are making these bad decisions. By becoming aware that you have personal issues that are inhibiting your level of success in business, you can begin to change for the better. Only you know what your own obstacles are in this area, and what you must do is figure out how to work with them. Through hard work over a long period of time, you may be able to conquer these inner conflicts that keep you from your goals. To perform at levels that will help you achieve your objectives, you need to first limit the inner conflict that is affecting you the most. To move forward, you need to understand that awareness of your difficulty, and a persistent effort to succeed, will help you get on with your life.

To succeed in business , you need a plan to follow that works for you, and fits your personality. Life is a lot of little choices, and it is up to you to make the choice of what you can do, and are willing to do.

After Irene: Authorities readying to gauge damage

(AP) ? Hurricane Irene fell short of the doomsday predictions of record-breaking storm surges in North Carolina and Virginia when it lumbered ashore. But a slow-crawling storm that spread out hundreds of miles was still hurling heavy rain and high winds at a wide swath of the East Coast a day after its first U.S. landfall, vexing officials attempting to gauge the full damage toll on the region.

Already it was clear Irene's storm surge had triggered scattered flooding in coastal areas, plunged more than 2 million power customers into darkness and roughed up one of the most densely populated areas of the country. Inititial reports suggested light damages in many areas from Irene, a lower-strength hurricane when it first barreled ashore in the U.S. on Saturday. But Irene inflicted scattered damage over an area so broad that the totality of the damage or the costs involved were not yet known.

Authorities said teams would be deploying Sunday in a bid to assess the full extent and severity of those damages after the passing of the storm, which is blamed for the loss of at least eight lives.

Virginia's Gov. Bob McDonnell had initially warned that Irene ? one of those rare hurricanes that virtually takes aim at the entire East Coast ? could be a "catastrophic" monster with record storm surges of up to 8 feet in some coastal areas of his state.

National Weather Service meteorologist Mike Montefusco said Norfolk came closest, with a storm surge of 7.55 feet. Six to 8 inches of rainfall fell over the region, and more was expected as Irene slowly left Virginia for the Northeast.

"I think it's a little strong to say we dodged a bullet, however it certainly could have turned out worse," Montefusco said.

Emergency crews around the region got set to head out after daybreak to assess damage reports like the one confirmed tornado in Chincoteague, Va. There was at least one other suspected tornado that ripped away roofs in another Virginia community, Sandbridge.

Authorities say Irene also blocked roads as it knocked out power in several areas of Virginia.

In North Carolina, authorities reported storm surge flooding along some waterways, impassible roads and up to a foot of rain in some areas.

Infrastructure was a chief worry in the region, where the sprawl of major cities, suburban communities and beachfront properties had set many civil defense planners on edge as Irene approached the region. Ports, airports, nuclear power plants and more lay in the path of such a widespread storm, its storm bands spreading out about 500 miles at one point.

In Lusby, Md., Constellation Energy Nuclear Group said one of two nuclear reactors at Calvert Cliffs went off-line automatically because of Irene's winds. Constellation said the plant is safe and stable.

Mark Sullivan, a spokesman for Constellation, issued a statement early Sunday saying it appears the Unit 1 reactor went off-line automatically when a large piece of aluminum siding dislodged from a building and came into contact with a transformer late Saturday night. He added all employees were safe, though an "unusual event" was declared ? the lowest of four emergency classifications by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The Unit 2 reactor in the complex wasn't affected and kept up operation, he said.

North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue said Irene inflicted significant damage along the North Carolina coast, adding that some areas were unreachable because of high water or downed power lines. Perdue planned an air tour Sunday of the hardest-hit coastal counties after TV coverage showed downed trees, toppled utility poles and power lines and mangled awnings. As with other states along the East Coast, there was no preliminary estimate yet of the dollar amount of damages.

Officials in North Carolina's Dare County said they were advised there was extensive flooding. A county emergency official, Dorothy Toolan, said teams would have to check the reports firsthand.

Elsewhere, authorities suggested Irene didn't create the kind of havoc that had been anticipated.

Bruce Shell, New Hanover County manager, said assessment teams were already in the streets on Saturday after the storm passed to make their evaluations, but they found nothing to raise alarm. Irene passed close to the county's coastline, but didn't make landfall there.

"We were prepared for a lot worse, but we got lucky on this one," Shell said.

Shell said he couldn't find any evidence of serious damage.

He said many of the 70,000 homes which lost power were back online by the end of the evening. Emergency operations for the county and for the city of Wilmington were shut down by 6 p.m. Shell said there was apparently a wastewater spill at Wrightsville Beach, but it appeared to be minor.

Pinehurst dentist Harwell Palmer, 53, said the worst that happened to his home at Ocean Isle Beach was a few pieces of siding that he was able to replace after riding out the storm. He said there was some street flooding, and high waves pounded the local pier, but it was still standing. Ocean Isle Beach missed a direct hit from Irene.

What did concern Palmer was the beach itself after heavy surf gobbled up shoreline.

"The main concern we will have going forward is the loss of beach," Palmer said.

The question still facing the region was whether Irene's impact would match the problems left behind by previous storms Floyd and Isabel.

In 1999, Floyd dropped at least 15 inches of rain on the eastern third of North Carolina. The flooding was the most damaging in the state's history, topping $3 billion in North Carolina alone after buildings were submerged, roads flooded, and livestock drowned.

Four years later, Isabel brought hurricane conditions to eastern North Carolina and southeast Virginia, causing about $1 billion in damages.

teddy - Kissing Disease Mono ? Health & Fitness

Mononucleosis is known as the ?Kissing Disease Mono.? However, the kissing disease mono is definitely not as funny as the name implies. It is called the kissing disease mono because it is spread through or is exchanged by infected saliva. Although kissing disease mono may occur at any age, it is known to be spread among 15 to 17 year olds. It will cause fever, swollen lymph glands and a sore throat.

If not treated with antibiotics, the mononucleosis symptom most often associated with mononucleosis, bodily fatigue, will invade other bodily functions and could even cause death. The disease known as mononucleosis is an attack by a herpes virus. The invading organism attacks red blood cells. As more and more red blood cells are attacked, the body makes more white blood cells to fight the invading virus.

Some of the other self mononucleosis treatments include throat lozenges and gargling with warm water so that you can soothe your throat. You need to make sure that you do not become dehydrated and that you are constantly drinking fluids. Depending on how sick you are, determines the amount of rest that you are going to need. If you are very sick, then you should not do anything that consists of lots of moving around. One of the worst things that you can do is to go out and play some sort of contact sport.

There is no treatment or drug for the kissing disease mono, however, because it is a cold based virus it will usually go away after it has run its course. Each individual symptom may be treated by getting plenty of bed rest, drinking plenty of fluids, gargling warm salt water and using cough drops. Tylenol which contains acetaminophen or Ibuprofen may be taken to help control any fever.

These white blood cells actually attack red blood cells that are infected by the herpes type virus that causes the mononucleosis symptom of tiredness. Red blood cells are needed to fulfill all the functions of a healthy body.
White blood cells are needed to attack and to kill invading virus organisms. When the body is fighting an attack by an invading organism, it will signal a shut down of activity and actually initiate fatigue. The body needs to concentrate all of its internal functions into destroying the invading viral attack.

It takes a simple blood test to diagnose the ?kissing disease? and although the symptoms of mononucleosis are quite unpleasant and may persist for several weeks, the disease is perfectly treatable. The goal of treatment in most cases is to relieve the symptoms like getting some rest, using pain relievers and fever reducers and drinking lots of fluids in order to avoid dehydration. The fever usually disappears within ten days while the feeling of general discomfort will probably go away in four to six weeks.

AP: Md. teen in custody in Pa. in Jihad Jane plot (AP)

PHILADELPHIA ? A Maryland teenager from Pakistan is being held in U.S. custody on terrorism charges, accused of soliciting funds and recruits to help a Pennsylvania woman known as Jihad Jane, two people close to the investigation confirm.

Juvenile charges filed last month accuse the 17-year-old of helping Colleen LaRose support overseas terrorists she had met online, they said Friday. LaRose, 48, has pleaded guilty to charges she plotted to kill a Swedish artist who had offended Muslims.

The Ellicott City, Md., teen had accepted a full scholarship to prestigious Johns Hopkins University, according to a person close to his family. Instead, he remains in custody at a youth facility in Berks County, Pa. He could have his case moved to adult court when he turns 18 next month.

According to the person, the FBI searched the family's home near Baltimore and interviewed the teen several times at FBI headquarters without a lawyer or family member present. However, the parents had authorized the interviews.

The teen met LaRose online when he was 15, according to LaRose's indictment and the person close to the investigation.

A law enforcement official confirmed details of his arrest to The Associated Press. Both people spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak publicly about the sealed juvenile case. The AP is not publicizing the teen's name because of his age.

The teen's lawyer, Jeffrey M. Lindy, told the AP it would be "very inappropriate" for him to comment on the case, which he called "highly sensitive."

The Philadelphia Inquirer first reported on the arrest in Friday editions.

The teen came to the U.S. four years ago and has lived with his strict, education-focused family in suburban Baltimore. An older brother attends a college honors program in engineering. The parents, legal residents, work menial jobs.

Teachers at Mt. Hebron High School remember the May graduate for his strong work ethic.

"(He) was very strong academically and an extremely hardworking student," Howard County school district spokeswoman Patti Caplan told the AP.

The teen is accused of meeting LaRose in an online chat room in 2009.

Her indictment alleges that he solicited money for her online and circulated a questionnaire to at least one woman asking about "her beliefs and intentions with regard to jihad," and if she had a European passport.

In soliciting funds, he pledged to forward money to LaRose, for her to pass on to the jihadists, authorities say.

"I know the sister and by Allah, all money will be transferred to her. The sister will then transfer the money to the brother via a method that I will not disclose," he wrote in July 2009, according to the LaRose indictment.

LaRose, of Pennsburg, had dubbed herself Jihad Jane in a YouTube video that had caught the attention of the FBI by 2009.

She faces a possible life term after pleading guilty to four federal charges, including conspiracy to support terrorists and lying to the FBI. Her sentencing has not been scheduled.

LaRose, an elder caretaker in small-town Pennsylvania, had cultivated a shadow life online. She destroyed her hard drive, stole her boyfriend's passport and moved to Ireland in August 2009. She soon persuaded another U.S. woman, Jamie Paulin-Ramirez, to join her there the following month.

Paulin-Ramirez, 32, a single mother from Colorado, had also spent long hours on the Internet before moving to Ireland with her 6-year-old son. She married an Algerian man days later.

She voluntarily returned to the U.S. after she, her husband and five others were detained in Ireland in a terror probe in March 2010. She pleaded guilty in Philadelphia this past March to a conspiracy charge and faces a maximum 15-year term.

In the view of Department of Justice officials, the charges against the homegrown, female suspects underscore "the evolving nature" of the terrorist threat.

The case now involves not just the American women but a teenage boy educated in U.S. schools.

Defense lawyer Jeremy Ibrahim, a Department of Justice veteran who represents Paulin-Ramirez and has handled a few federal juvenile cases, one involving an arson that destroyed part of Interstate 95, said the case "clearly was a difficult decision for the prosecutors."

"However, they certainly appear to be acting in the best interest of all involved, including the American people," Ibrahim said.

LaRose's lawyer, public defender Mark Wilson, has not returned recent messages seeking comment about the juvenile's arrest.

The teen is charged with providing material support to terrorists and other crimes. His diverse, academically rigorous high school was about half white and one-quarter Asian, including a fair number of students of Middle Eastern descent, Caplan said. The school, with nearly 1,500 students, is also 13 percent black and 5 percent Hispanic. The suspect did not take part in sports but won several academic honors and awards.

A Johns Hopkins spokeswoman confirmed the teen had been accepted but would not be enrolling.

The Department of Justice declined to comment on reports of his arrest.

Analysis: Where does Jobs stand among America's iconic CEOs? (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? The question is not whether Steve Jobs is an iconic CEO, but where Apple Inc's co-founder ranks in the pantheon of business leaders who have carved out a place in history.

Jobs would surely pass the Times Square test, meaning many people walking around the New York City tourist mecca would know who he is, while they might not recognize the names of other business legends such as General Electric's former Chief Executive Jack Welch.

And Jobs' technological innovations, among them the Mac computer, iPod, iPhone, and iPad, have brought him the same one-name recognition as Carnegie, Ford, Gates, Murdoch, and others.

But 50 years from now, will the Nano be considered as revolutionary as the Model T?

"What Ford did for the automobile -- just look at the suburbs and highways that developed from him, the assembly lines. Ford had a tremendous effect," said Mike Carrier, a professor at Rutgers School of Law in New Jersey, who has written extensively on innovation and intellectual property.

"I would put Jobs up in that category in terms of how he revolutionized our concept of music, of phones, of the computer, of literally everything."

But others say the jury is still out on the lasting influence of Jobs' creations, given the breakneck pace of technological innovations and the fickleness of consumers. Motorola's Razr, for example, was thought to be revolutionary just a few years ago.

"I'm not sure how all these innovations will stack up in the long-term," said Peter Cappelli, a management professor at the Wharton School of Business.

BETWEEN EDISON AND DISNEY

When Jobs first started out more than three decades ago, there were some who thought he would not make it.

Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, associate dean of the Yale School of Management, remembers vividly how Jobs awkwardly introduced himself to Polaroid CEO Ed Land during a lunch at Michela's in Cambridge, Massachusetts

in 1985.

"He came over to Ed to thank him for his wisdom in marrying progressive management with technological advancement," Sonnenfeld said. "After he left, Ed shook his head and said, 'That guy is never going to make it. He doesn't get technology. He's just a salesman.'"

Jobs is a salesman, one of the most successful of the last half century. But the magnitude of his technological brilliance -- The New York Times pointed out that his name appears as inventor on 313 patents -- and his penchant for theatrics place him on a historical spectrum somewhere between Thomas Edison and Walt Disney.

"There are few CEOs who can compare to Jobs in terms of breadth of activities, length of time in command, and connection with consumers," said Harvard Business School professor Anita Elberse.

Part of Jobs' mystique is owed to a confluence of factors either unique to him or to our times. The attention paid to CEOs by financial analysts and the media far exceeds what it was during Henry Ford's day, for instance.

And Jobs' career trajectory as a pioneer, failure, and comeback success has the narrative arc that journalists love. Walt Disney or William Randolph Hearst hit on one or two of those plot points, but not all three.

"You can't underestimate the massive impact the press has had in building up the concept of the celebrity CEO," said Eric Abrahamson, professor of management at Columbia Business School.

He pointed to the reinvention of Kimberly Clarke as a case in point. That company began as a lumber manufacturer, then moved on to pulp before hitting it big with gas masks during World War I. After the war, Kimberly Clarke's fortunes began a downward spiral and did not recover until the company introduced Kleenex.

Though that turnaround is akin to the one Jobs' pulled off after returning to Apple in 1996 -- its stock is up roughly 9,000 percent over that time -- Abrahamson said, "I couldn't tell you who the CEO was who led Kimberly Clarke's turnaround."

PIXIE DUST

Jobs diverges from his peer group in two key aspects: the number of industries his company's products have fundamentally changed and consumers' identification of him as the singular force behind those products.

Ford helped create the automobile industry. Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. Jobs designed aesthetically pleasing, easy-to-use devices that changed the way computing, music and movies were made and enjoyed.

By accident or design, consumers have made a visceral connection between Apple products and the guy in the blue jeans, black turtleneck, and wire-rimmed glasses. They know Jobs did not create the devices on his own, but they desperately want to believe that he did.

They have sprinkled some of Disney's pixie dust on him, in a manner of speaking.

"Consumers personally believe that Jobs is solely responsible for the products in their house," Elberse said. But they do not think that Murdoch alone puts out News Corp newspapers, for instance.

"Fifty or a hundred years from now they'll look back on Apple products and think, 'Steve Jobs made this,'" she said. "That's his cultural impact."

And his legacy.

Relationships Are Hard Work | Daddy's Art

Relationships are A LOT of hard work. And if you haven?t already been in one, you will eventually end up in one?a relationship, that is. There is no hiding the fact that most relationships end up in divorce today more than ever (I think the statistics are something like over 50%). With divorce rates so high, some people may wonder, ?well, what?s the point of getting married or involved seriously then anyway?? The truth of the matter is that any and every good relationship takes work; but sadly, most Americans want things to be ridiculously easy and so when they?re not, they simply move on.

One of the biggest and most commonly seen mistakes that couples make when getting involved in a relationship is that they jump into it without having been friends first. Why is being ?friends? so critical to the success of a relationship? Well, there?s a saying which states that you can?t build something unless you have a solid foundation first. For romantic, life-long relationships to survive, friendship has to be that solid foundation. It is during the time when two people are friends that they get to know one another better and find out common likes and dislikes, etc. You learn to appreciate the other person during this time to find out whether or not you are compatible. Too many people jump into the romantic part of relationships for the excitement and thrill, only to realize that after all of that has worn off, they aren?t really left with much else.

When I first started dating my current boyfriend of over 1 year, we were friends first. We shared a lot of the same interests and genuinely enjoyed each others company. There are some people who get along fabulously in a long term relationship (ie. Marriage) after only knowing each other a short while. However, there is a saying that says something to the effect that if your foundation is built in sand, it will never last. That being said, the same is true of relationships. If your relationship is built upon lust or some other falsity, it will never withstand the storms that can sometimes rock and test relationships. Take time to get to know someone. The last thing you want to find out just after you?re married is that the other person has a ton of financial trouble or that something else more serious is going on. By building a relationship on friendship first, you are starting out on a much more solid foundation.

Some studies advise that a couple should date for at least two to three years prior to becoming engaged and/or married so that they have this time to get to know one another. Part of the reason that a lot of marriages don?t work out is also due to the media?s portrayal of what love is. On television as well as in other media forms, love is portrayed romantically and/or passionately only. Seldom do you see two people portrayed who are enjoying one another?s company. Instead, you see two people falling madly in love, and then you cut to six months later when they are engaged and another 6 months later where they are married. We really need to refocus our energies when it comes to making relationships work so that they will be healthier and longer-lasting.

Steve Jobs Faces Uphill Battle Against Cancer: Experts (HealthDay)

THURSDAY, Aug. 25 (HealthDay News) -- One of the hallmarks of Steve Jobs' tenure as CEO of Apple Inc. was the secrecy that shrouded products he was about to unveil -- from the iPod to the iPhone to the iPad -- creating tremendous consumer interest.

Jobs' announcement Wednesday night that he was stepping down as the head of the hugely successful technology company he co-founded in a northern California garage 35 years ago was similarly thin on details, although speculation immediately turned to his ongoing health problems.

In a letter to Apple's board, the 56-year-old Jobs said he "always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come."

This much is known about the health of Jobs, a legendarily private man: Since 2004, he has been fighting a rare form of pancreatic cancer called neuroendocrine cancer. In January, he took his second medical leave from Apple after undergoing a liver transplant for tumors that had spread to that organ.

Pancreatic cancer expert Dr. Craig Devoe, from the department of medicine at North Shore-LIJ Health System in New Hyde Park, N.Y., said that "neuroendocrine tumors are uncommon, with only a few thousand cases a year."

For those that affect the pancreas, the numbers are even lower with fewer than 1,000 cases a year in the United States. In contrast, there are around 40,000 cases of other pancreatic cancers a year, Devoe said.

Dr. David M. Levi, a professor of clinical surgery, liver and GI transplantation at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, said neuroendocrine cancer "is an unusual tumor. It can arise in a number of places, including the pancreas." Such tumors can also start in the lungs.

It's one of the few tumors that can benefit -- to some extent -- from a transplant, Levi said. Jobs' cancer started in the pancreas and then spread to the liver, making the liver transplant an option, Levi said, adding he has treated patients with this type of cancer and done liver transplants.

While the prognosis for neuroendocrine cancer is often better than for the more common type of pancreatic cancer, in which patients generally live less than a year after diagnosis, neuroendocrine cancer "can also be bad," Levi said.

Neuroendocrine cancer can return after treatment, Levi explained. And while a liver transplant can be effective, "it is not as great a picture as we first thought," he said. "A lot of these patients who have transplants eventually do recur."

"The vast majority of patients that have recurrent disease will die of their disease. One of the problems with the [liver] transplant is that now you are on immunosuppressant drugs, and while they keep you from rejection or destroying the liver, the immune system also would have helped deal with tumors," he said.

Devoe said a liver transplant is a treatment when "your back's against the wall," and isn't expected to cure neuroendocrine cancer, so very few are done. "There is still likely disease in lungs or bone or other places," he said.

"The fact that the disease came back is not surprising," he said. There are still some treatment options, including chemotherapy and radiation, he added.

These treatments won't cure the disease, but they may slow its progression, Devoe said. "It may extend the life of patients. But at this point, your best treatments are behind you and survival may be under a year or two," he said. "It's clearly incurable."

Doctors don't really know what causes neuroendocrine tumors. In the past year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved two new drugs for neuroendocrine tumors -- sunitinib and everolimus.

In a commencement address in 2005 to Stanford University graduates, Jobs said: "No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it."

NATO considers options for a postwar role in Libya (AP)

BRUSSELS ? NATO planners are drawing up options for a possible NATO role in Libya after the civil war in the North African nation ends, officials said Wednesday.

NATO's governing body ? the North Atlantic Council ? has told its military staff to brainstorm ways to assist a future U.N. mission to stabilize the country.

"The council provided the NATO military authorities with a set of political guidelines for a possible future NATO supporting role in Libya ... in support of wider international efforts," NATO spokeswoman Oana Lungescu said.

Planners are expected to come up with options in the next week to present to the alliance's political leadership.

NATO warplanes have flown nearly 20,000 sorties to Libya in the past five months, including about 7,500 strike attacks against Moammar Gadhafi's forces. But the campaign has exposed deep fissures within the alliance, with only eight of its 28 members taking part in the military action.

Diplomats say a number of member states have been unhappy with the intervention in Libya, saying it was detracting attention and resources from NATO's main mission in Afghanistan, where the 10-year war against the Taliban has not been going well for the alliance.

As a result, any follow-on mission in Libya is expected to be of limited size and duration.

The U.N. has already made significant progress in planning for a post-conflict stabilization effort in Libya.

Lungescu said the North Atlantic Council had agreed that any possible future supporting role for NATO must "satisfy the criteria of a demonstrable need, a sound legal basis and wide regional support."

Another condition was that NATO would not have any "sustained" troop presence on the ground in Libya, officials said.

A senior NATO officer who spoke on condition of anonymity because the planning was still in its initial stages, said support for the U.N. mission could consist of air and sea deliveries of humanitarian aid as well as setting up training programs for Libyan security personnel in Europe.

The alliance claims to have unmatched experience in the reform of armed forces from authoritarian nations, based on its work with East European military and police forces after the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union.

Other assistance to the U.N. mission could consist of logistical support, or reconnaissance aircraft and unmanned drones to provide surveillance over Libya.

The North Atlantic Council on Wednesday briefed ambassadors of partner nations on future plans in Libya. Five non-NATO countries have joined the alliance in the Libyan campaign ? Jordan, Qatar, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates and Morocco.

Qatar and UAE in particular sent warplanes and provided key diplomatic support and financial aid to the anti-Gadhafi opposition. They are likely to continue playing a role in support of stabilization and reconstruction efforts.

Humans may not be main climate change source: Romney (Reuters)

LEBANON, New Hampshire (Reuters) ? Presidential candidate Mitt Romney, in danger of losing his 2012 Republican primary front-runner status, on Wednesday tweaked his position on global climate change, saying he does not know if humans are the primary cause.

Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, also said he would not place restrictions on carbon emissions if elected and did not favor spending heavily on climate solutions.

He was asked about global warming at a town hall meeting in Lebanon, New Hampshire, and said he believed the world is getting hotter and humans contribute in some way to the change.

"Do I think the world's getting hotter? Yeah, I don't know that but I think that it is," he said. "I don't know if it's mostly caused by humans.

"What I'm not willing to do is spend trillions of dollars on something I don't know the answer to."

In June, a day after launching his second bid for the White House, Romney caused a stir by saying he thought humans had contributed to climate change and that emissions of pollutants should be reduced.

A study by the National Academy of Sciences in 2010 found that "climate change is occurring, is caused largely by human activities and poses significant risks." That view is backed by most climate scientists. But surveys have shown that many Republicans do not agree -- especially those who are more likely to vote in the primary elections.

Two polls on Wednesday showed Romney, a narrow front-runner in the Republican field for much of the year, has lost the lead in the Republican nominating contest, trailing Rick Perry by double digits. The Texas governor recently jumped into the race.

Campaigning in New Hampshire last week, Perry, who is typically more of a social conservative, called climate change a "theory that still has not been proven" and labeled the science behind it "politicized."

Romney also said on Wednesday that he would make weaning the United States from imported energy from the Middle East a priority over reducing carbon emissions.

Still, using additional domestic nuclear, natural gas, and other resources could have a side benefit of cutting carbon emissions, Romney said. "My view is pursue a strategy which gets us into energy independence which has as a byproduct it gets us into less CO2 emitting."

He criticized a bill backed by President Barack Obama that would have capped carbon emissions and allowed polluters to buy and sell rights to emit carbon.

"I do not believe in cap and trade and I do not believe in putting a carbon cap" on polluting industries, Romney said.
