Book Marketing on the Web for Authors or Business Professionals ...

Whether you are marketing your book as a dedicated fiction/nonfiction author or as a business professional promoting your expertise for the PR benefit of your company, the principles of marketing on the Internet are the same:

First, you share not sell. In other words, you do NOT tweet on Twitter ?Buy my book? nor do you post on Facebook ?You must read my book.?

You share your expertise with your online connections, which ?encourages? them to check out your website or your Facebook Page or your Twitter profile. (Your Pinterest boards may also be of interest.)

Second, you share the related information of other people on the web ? information that is compatible with who you are and your brand, book, business or cause.

For example, people who might be your competitors in your town can become your collaborators on the Internet. This is because the Internet provides access to huge potential audiences so there is usually enough business ? or book-buying expenditures ? to go around.

One of the collaborative sites online is Triberr.com ? where you can become a member of a group of bloggers who tweet the links of new blog posts written by other members of the group.

What I especially like about Triberr is that I can decide on an individual basis if I want to tweet a blog post. For example, even if I like a blogger yet do not think a particular post is good for my Twitter followers, I do not have to tweet that post link.

Third, you can use your Twitter, Facebook, and other social media connections to be a news filter for you on subject areas such as book marketing, book publishing, the newest ebook information, etc.

While at first glance this activity may not seem to advance your own book promotion, it can keep you informed of new opportunities as well as potential sand traps.

Fourth, the more you know about book marketing, the more you can ?blend? your pool of information to figure out strategies for your specific fiction and nonfiction books and ebooks.

Getting information from multiple sources helps prevent a book author from taking one person?s advice as the ultimate truth. The fact is that there is NOT a one-size-fits-all book marketing strategy for everyone, especially given the range of fiction and nonfiction topics.

And couple with this is the fact that things on the Internet change so quickly. For example, Amazon Studios (Amazon is now in the film and TV comedy business) overnight changed from a free 18-month option to a free 45-day option for submissions. That is a big difference that anyone interested in submitting to Amazon Studios would want to know.

Or what about the fact that Amazon?s POD publisher, CreateSpace, now allows CreateSpace authors? books to be sold on the European Amazon sites once an author has signed up (for free) for this opportunity? This is the kind of information you will know about if you are involved in book marketing on the web with communities of other authors who share good info.

The bottom line? Nowadays, unless you are a very well-known and successful author, you cannot afford to ignore online book marketing.

And the corollary of this is that you cannot afford to only have your books in physical formats.

Check that you own the electronic rights to previously published books of yours ? and then get them converted into ebooks asap. (You can then participate in author forums discussing the pros and cons, for example, of participating in Amazon?s Kindle Select option.)

Book marketing has never been so open to experimentation and control by authors themselves. Take advantage of these opportunities now!
