News and Society Blog-Economics: Inflation - Its Effects Created ...

To explain the quality theory of inflation we see it as founded upon the belief that a currency being used is acceptable and capable of being traded for goods and services, but also is beneficial to the buyer. However explaining how the quantity theory of inflation works is associated to the aspect of currency. This theory actually takes into account the currency's supply and demand aspects as well as its nominal value of exchange.

Inflation will create many effects upon an economy both good and bad. Inflation can target an entire society or even pin point its effects towards each industry, business or individual. The reason this is possible is because inflation itself is never evenly spread throughout society thus creating both its positive and negative effects.

Positive Effects

? Business Growth - inflation that is capable of being controlled, in that savings quite often can be invested and show growth. Opposed to where savings if held in a bank would show up as a net loss.

? Declining Debt Values - the true value of a currency will decrease as it becomes consumed by inflation. This translates to a decrease of real value on debt which would actually benefit those governments, businesses and private investors that were burdened with high amounts of debt effectively wiping out the debt completely in time.

? Increasing Stock Values - stocks previously purchased cheaper very well might increase in value and if timed correctly when sold off, would yield substantial returns.

? Increasing Asset Values - that are fixed may well increase which in-turn would make some businesses financially more stable. In a traditional sense higher prices often are a by-product of increased inflation. So in theory fixed assets would increase in value during times of high inflation.

Negative Effects

? Many costs are concealed towards reducing purchasing power. These hidden costs could prove an increased benefit to some, however harmful to many others as a whole.

? Soaring rates of inflation become harmful to the economy as a whole.

? Additional shortfalls within the markets would make it much more difficult for businesses to re- strategize, plan, budget and remain competitive for the long-term.

? Inflation could also emerge as interference for productivity, due to resources being moved away from businesses and their products and services while attempting to recover and regain profits.

? Rising inflation will additionally force labor to ask for increased salaries just to stay current with rising market conditions and higher prices on food, services and other living expenses. This ultimately will increase stress on businesses. Forcing them to boost net profits, lay off workers and increase prices for the products they manufacture. The result will only intensify the chaos on-going throughout the economy.

A small amount of inflation is always good for a society as it aids in competitiveness and more profits. An inflation rate of two to three percent is healthy but when inflation starts going out of control and worse we see runaway inflation with rates increasing at 10% per month we set the stage for hyperinflation. An economy suffering from hyperinflation will change an entire society into desperate times quickly. Sadly the United States and other nations are heading into this direction now. Get your own fiscal house in order today. Be Prepared!

Mexico leftist alleges money laundering in presidential election

MEXICO CITY | Thu Jul 19, 2012 4:23am BST

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico's leftist runner-up in the July 1 presidential election stepped up his campaign on Wednesday to annul the vote by accusing President-elect Enrique Pena Nieto of using laundered money to fund his campaign.

Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said he had found evidence that shell companies were set up to funnel money into the coffers of Pena Nieto's Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, during the campaign.

Over 100 million pesos (4.8 million pounds) were used to buy prepaid debit cards handed out to voters to support Pena Nieto, Lopez Obrador alleged.

"We have sufficient proof to say that Pena Nieto's campaign used illicit funds," he told a news conference after bringing boxes of evidence to authorities at the electoral tribunal. "This is money laundering."

Lopez Obrador has accused Pena Nieto of buying votes and overspending for the campaign, demanding a recount soon after the election. But this was the first time he made specific money-laundering allegations.

The PRI dismissed the claims.

"We reject as inadmissible the accusations of money laundering, which constitute a flagrant defamation," the party said in a statement.

"(Lopez Obrador) demanded a recount and when it confirmed the result, he changed his argument to massive vote buying, which did not stand and now he is launching another unlikely charge of money laundering," the PRI said.

Lopez Obrador named several companies he said had been used to channel money to the debit cards, saying some had false addresses, as he presented a 32-page document to the media outlining the allegations.

The electoral tribunal has until September to consider complaints and declare an official winner.

Pena Nieto, a former governor of Mexico's most populous state, beat Lopez Obrador in the election by more than 6 percentage points. This week, he met outgoing President Felipe Calderon to discuss the transition to his new government.

RESPECT RESULTS

Pena Nieto has called his win "categorical," but said he would wait until the electoral tribunal made its ruling to name an official transition team.

"I am hoping that the parties will take a democratic stance and respect the results of this election," Pena Nieto said earlier on Wednesday. "I will be respectful (of opposition voices) as long as they stay peaceful and legal."

Lopez Obrador lost the 2006 race to Calderon by less than 1 percentage point. Following that defeat, he also contested the results, mounting protests that choked Mexico City for weeks.

Political analysts said Lopez Obrador's series of allegations lacked strong evidence and they speculated that his main objective was to hold on to his leadership position in the political left rather than win his battle in court to void the election.

"It is a show," said political analyst Fernando Dworak. "Even though his evidence is weak, it foments a story of conspiracy and fraud. This keeps his base mobilized."

Calderon's conservative National Action Party, or PAN, succeeded in ousting the PRI from the presidency in a 2000 election after the party had ruled Mexico for seven decades straight. During that time, the PRI acquired a reputation for corruption, vote rigging and repressing protesters.

Accusing the centrist party of resorting to its old ways, Lopez Obrador, a former member of the PRI and ex-mayor of Mexico City, said he had not yet decided on a strategy if his complaints were rejected by the electoral authorities.

"It will be very serious if they don't act. We are going to use every legal recourse to investigate this and if there is impunity, we will target the responsible authorities," he said.

The dispute could become a stumbling block to Pena Nieto's effort to fast-track plans to reform labour, tax and energy laws that he says will speed up Mexico's lagging economic growth.

The PRI failed to win a majority in Congress and will need opposition support to push through its reforms.

The leftist Party of the Democratic Revolution, or PRD, which backed Lopez Obrador along with a coalition of leftist parties, is the No. 2 force in the lower house.

China: Challenges to economic growth noted

BEIJING, July 18 (UPI) -- China's slowing economic growth is "an uncomfortable ebbing," for the country, the official Xinhua news agency said Thursday.

Citing the second quarter's 7.6 GDP growth, a Xinhua news analysis said it was sharply down from 9.5 percent a year earlier and half a percentage point below 8.1 percent in the first quarter.

"Although the pace is still enviable for economies elsewhere, it marks an uncomfortable ebbing for China," the report said. "It was the lowest rate since the 2008-2009 global recession, when China's growth eased to 6.6 percent in the first quarter 2009 before a massive government stimulus package provided double-digit growth."

While the slowdown is partly due to global economic woes such as the crisis in the Eurozone and slow recovery in the United States, China's largest trade partner, Xinhua said it is also self-induced, as the Chinese government has sought to tame high inflation and ease runaway real estate prices.

While the government's policies have largely worked, "these efforts have coincided with the global downturn and domestic economic rebalancing, sparking concerns that the slowdown might be deeper than initially expected," it said.

"The ripple effect of slowing growth is beginning to weigh on enterprises' profitability, exacerbating their financial stress amid rising costs and dwindling demand, as warnings of lower profits or even losses set to overshadow the market in the coming weeks," Xinhua said.

The report echoed Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's warning this week that the economy has not formed a stable recovery and economic difficulties may continue for some time.

The report said analysts worry relying on the government to increase investment to spur growth will set back efforts to wean the economy off its reliance on state investment, lead to the construction of unneeded factories and saddle the economy with bad debts.

(AP) ? Bradley Wiggins considers the two punishing days that await in the Pyrenees, climbs that have broken many riders. He insists these stages are nothing special.

"It goes uphill like all the others, doesn't it?" he said.

The nonchalance of the Tour de France leader will indeed be tested.

On Wednesday, there's the "Circle of Death," as the four brutal climbs are known, none more daunting than the 7,000-foot Tourmalet. On Thursday, the last summit finishes atop the 5,300-foot Peyragudes.

Wiggins is talking a big game in his bid to become Britain's first Tour de France champion. He says Wednesday's stage "isn't any more difficult than any other stage we've done up to this stage, really."

Wiggins has reason to be confident. His Team Sky is stacked with such strong climbers as Norwegian champion Edvald Boasson Hagen, Australians Richie Porte and Michael Rogers, and above all Kenyan-born Briton Christopher Froome. Still, questions remain.

Will "King of the Alps" Pierre Rolland also dominate the Pyrenees? Or will the man from Down Under, defending champion Cadel Evans, go over the top in a last-ditch move to save his Tour de France dream?

Rolland has been hailed in France following a victory at l'Alpe d'Huez in 2011 and a win at the La Toussuire ski resort last week. But he must persevere in the Pyrenees if he wants to catch Sweden's Frederik Kessiakoff in the race for the polka-dot climbers jersey that designates the Tour's King of the Mountains.

Overall, Wiggins leads Froome by 2:05 and Vincenzo Nibali of Italy by 2:23. Evans remains fourth, and the Aussie needs to attack to begin cutting into his 3:19 deficit in the chase for the yellow jersey.

The 154 other riders left in the 99th Tour will have plenty of time to ponder the 16th and 17th stages ? the Pyrenees are visible on the horizon from Pau, the medieval city where the race pauses for its last rest day.

Team Sky will spend its day off there recuperating from more than two weeks of nearly nonstop racing.

"A little bit of a lie-in, a couple miles out on the bike to keep the momentum going, a bite to eat, massage, media, a meal, sleep," team manager Dave Brailsford said. "That's pretty much it, really."

R & R will be the order of the day for other teams as well in a Tour that has become of a war of attrition. Crashes and illnesses have already caused more than 20 percent of the original 198 starters in Liege, Belgium, to quit,

"We try not to get carried away with emotion. It's all about performance and we're very businesslike at this stage," Wiggins said during a news conference Tuesday.

The coming ride is through the mountains forming France's border with Spain. Among the Pyrenean peaks that will haunt riders are a chain of mountains so difficult they have been known as the "Circle of Death" since cyclists first scaled them in the Tour of 1910.

"Generally, the Pyrenees are a bit harder than the Alps," said U.S. cyclist Tejay van Garderen, who holds the white jersey for best rider 25 and under. "The roads are a bit rougher. They're just a bit more taxing."

The four legendary passes the riders will climb Wednesday are the Peyresourde, Aubisque, Aspin and Tourmalet, the highest point on this year's Tour. The pack on Thursday must ascend the Col de Mente and Port de Bales before scaling Peyragudes.

Pierrick Fedrigo of France won Monday's 15th stage by leading a two-man final breakaway. Wiggins kept the lead as he stayed with his rivals in the main pack far behind.

The 99-mile route from Samatan to Pau had a mostly flat layout, but teams with strong sprinters didn't try to chase down the breakaway riders as fatigue kicked in following a fast start. Wiggins finished 11 minutes, 50 seconds behind.

Yahoo Sheds A Little Light On Its Mobile Activities In Q2: Revenues Up 50% (But From A ?Small Base?)

yahoo axis screenshotsIn Yahoo's earnings call, CFO Tim Morse did not diverge much from his prepared script based on numbers from Q2. And when asked about when new CEO Marissa Mayer might be making her first appearance before analysts and investors, he simply replied, "I don't know." But he did take a question near the end that shed a little light on where it is standing today with mobile. He noted that mobile revenues at Yahoo are up by 50 percent on last year -- although he also noted that this was from a "small base."

Resumes, Cover Letters, Interviews and Personal Brand | Mom Inc ...

July 16, 2012

It is said that a great cover letter compels a Recruiter to read your resume and a great resume ensures an interview and of course a great interview lands you the job.? But in many cases 100?s of job applicants are vying for one coveted role.? How can you make certain that you move from one step to the next? With the right brand. Branding isn?t just for organizations; we create an image of ourselves that we put forward to the world and this representation of ourselves is never as important as during a job hunt. Below are a few tips to ensure you are presenting the brand that best represents you.

Resume/Cover Letter: No Errors Allowed

I cannot stress this one enough.? Spelling and grammar mistakes are unforgivable.? Even one small error represents you as someone for whom shoddy work is acceptable. Recruiters are looking for ways to shorten the daunting stack of resumes; this is an easy way to dismiss you. Don?t let them.? Proofread your documents, and then have someone else proofread them and then proof them again.? Also, don?t count on spell check and grammar check to save you.? Two of the most common mistakes I?ve seen are spelling ?manger? for ?manager? and the improper use of their, there and they?re which won?t necessarily get flagged in your documents.

Resume/Cover Letter: White Space Please

Please do not cram as much information on your resume as possible.? I assure you; if your resume is hard to read it won?t get read. Leave ample space between sections and keep your margins to the standard size. A clean, clear resume and cover letter in a font large enough to actually read represent you as a professional who is confident in the skills listed.? When you stuff as much on the page as possible you come across as a braggart trying to compensate with quantity over quality.

Resume/Cover Letter: Short and Snappy

Your cover letter should be three paragraphs; a brief intro, a brief overview of experience and a brief overview of education.? Then close with a brief line such as ?I?m looking forward to hearing from you.? Sincerely?? Did you catch that I was stressing you be brief?? Don?t repeat the details that can be found on your resume. That is what your resume is for.? Any more information than a brief (there?s that word again) introduction is too much.? You want to be seen as a crisp communicator not muddled and verbose.

Resume/Cover Letter: Buried Treasure

Make sure you highlight your strengths.? Too often I?ve seen a key piece of information hidden between superfluous details. When you first sit down to write a resume start by listing your proudest achievements and the times when you most felt on top of your game.? When you have completed your resume cross reference that list and make sure those particulars are clearly evident.? There are a few ways of doing this such as a section dedicated to accomplishments, a line outlining highlighted undertakings at each employer or within the objective (for example: I?d like to continue my award winning sales career with an employer that allows me the opportunity for creativity.?

Interviews: Speak in Numbers

Whether in the public or private sector, whether in for-profit or non-profit, and whether your role will spend or save money your potential employer is thinking about the bottom line.? Don?t make them do the math for themselves. Which of the following sounds better to you? ?With my last employer I was able to be creative with my HR initiatives as a result we saw productivity rise.? Not bad, but how about this? ?Using a minimal budget and some ingenuity we created new team based initiatives that resulted in a 25% increase in production.?? Much better.? Arm yourself with these numerical details before the interview so you can present yourself as an asset who sees the bigger picture.

Interviews: Do your Homework

I open every single interview with ?What do you know about my organization??? How a candidate answers tells me many things such as how much research they did, where they researched, and what information they took away from that research, all of which gives me clues into how they work and how they will fit in with my team. But nothing tells me more about a candidate than when they didn?t do any research at all. The bare minimum should be a visit to your prospective employer?s website but in this case more is best.? Ideas include: looking for employees on Linked In to see what has been said about the company; conducting a simple Google search to lead you to current events, press releases, awards or potential trouble the organization may be in; and my personal favourite, pick up the phone and call a customer to ask about the culture and personality of the organization.

Interviews: Take your Turn

Ask intelligent questions but at the very least ask questions.? When the interviewers ask you if there is anything you want to know do not say ?No, I think you?ve covered everything.? Instead ask a question; any question.? Even if the interviewer has in fact covered everything ask for more details regarding something discussed earlier in the interview, ask about last year?s Christmas party or ask about the interviewer?s tenure with the organization. When you don?t ask a question the interviewer can be left wondering if you were interested and engaged in the organization or if you are just looking for a job. Present yourself as a thoughtful and attentive candidate and you just may find yourself as their newest employee.

Health and Fitness Talk ? The Scoop on HFCS and non-alcoholic ...

picture of Soda pop cans with HFCS

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has rushed across America and the world to become the most common liver disease and to this date over 30 million people have been afflicted with NAFLD which can lead to liver cancer, cirrhosis, and even liver failure. This disease does not derive from alcohol abuse nor does it come from Hepatitis C or B but really comes from standard American diet which has spread across the globe and affected many.

NAFLD happens when fatty lipids occupy cells just enough to go over five percent of the livers weight and this has been linked to type 1 and 2 diabetes which hints that NFLD has a greater impact on high amounts of excessive sugar intake than saturated fats.? It should be strongly noted that eating non-processed saturared fat which is in raw milk, butter, cheeses, and meat from cows that have been grass feed will not cause fatty liver disease.
High fructose corn syrup is one of the usual suspects hand in hand with trans-fatty acids which can be found in cheap processed oils and are in most foods from ketchup to even sandwhich meats this is probably what they mean by advertising it as a preservative.? The bigest problems with high fructose corn syrup is that the liver becomes solely responsable for metabolizing it and what it cannot motabolize it quickly turns into fat and this also applies to all those fancy table sugar packets.? This also becomes true of glucose or table sugar as the liver is also responsable for metabolizing as much as 20 percent of glucose.? A simple formula would be that for every 120 calories consumed 1 calorie gets stored as fat and the same 120 calories of HFCS results in 40 calories worth converting to fat which stays in the liver. Of course the climb in obesity amongst children and adults is a very direct result of High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) coming from treats such as baged chips, comercial pastries, bologne or any processed meat as they are not using it as a flavor enhancer but as a preservative and out of many High Fructose Corn Syrup products tested by independent laboratories it was found to contain very high levels of mercury which is used to manufacture HFCS.

picture of liver and organs

The bigest and most serious consequence is that this TOXIC MERCURY can get stuck in your own liver and causes havoc on the liver as it tries to metabolize HFCS and produces uric acid which of course will up your blood presure, cause gout and lead to liver disease.?? The majority of the corn around is GMO corn and is the one and only selection for HFCS manufacturers becuase GMO destroys probiotic bacteria which puts a damper on the liver as it forces it to work more and harder which ups your chances of liver disease and or liver failure.? One of the reasons that HFCS is widely used is that it is highly addictive which causes you to snack more and even when you are not hungry as it causes slight pangs which make you eat or drink more.? A pure example is when you buy that comercial iced tea along with those fries, the HFCS in all of those items will trigger you to eat more and drink more as it dageroulsly interfers with your hormones and your brain becomes numb to the feeling of being full and by and by you will notice your weight becoming more and more.? The long term affect of HFCS is not know yet as it has only been around for 30 to 40 years but one would be wise to know that the long term effects would not be to good, if you live to tell about it.
Simply stay away and do not eat processed foods, all sodas, energy drinks, iced teas, this goes for gatorade as well,? all junk foods and transfats. Look for anyting even hinting of HFCS and artificial sweeteners like Coke Zero or light as these are the most dangerous ones.? Get your daily regime of exercise and fresh nutrients and you will be alright.

If your already overweight, have any type of diabetes or even high blood pressure get a liver enzyme blood test done. You can reverse the damage done by avoiding all foods containing HFCS and artificial sweeteners and drinking herbs such as milk thistle becuase it contains silymarin which is a flavonoid that goes directly to the liver to repair damage.

Dateline: Race legacy of Mississippi waiter's TV moment

Watch the original 1966 NBC News documentary, "Mississippi: A Self-Portrait" in its entirety.

By Tim Beacham and Paul Ryan
Dateline NBC

WARNING:? Some of the language in this story could be considered shocking to some.

The Mississippi Delta is thousands of miles and a lifetime away from Southern California where Raymond De Fellita and Yvette Johnson grew up.

Ray is white and pushing 50. He was raised in the Hollywood Hills, the son of a successful filmmaker and novelist. Yvette, is black and more than?10 years younger than Ray. She grew up in a gated community in San Diego, the daughter of former NFL football star.

Until the spring of 2011, the two of them had never met. But in a strange twist of fate, both discovered that they shared a unique bond, rooted in an NBC News documentary that aired only once, on a Sunday evening in May 1966.

The film, called Mississippi:A Self Portrait, was written, produced and directed by Ray's father, Frank De Fellita. Yvette's grandfather, Booker Wright, was its star.? Although he made only a brief cameo appearance in the film, it was an appearance that would have a lasting impact of the lives of both Booker and Frank.? And nearly?50 years later, it would draw Ray and Yvette together on a project to find the meaning of that single moment captured on a grainy snippet of film.

As a child, Ray watched the films his father had made when he worked as a producer for NBC News in the 1960s. There were documentaries about the Battle of the Bulge, the Ghosts of England, and Adoption. But Ray's favorite by far, was Mississippi: A Self-Portrait.

"And I remember when we used to screen the films at home. They were, by then, 10 years old." Ray says. "They looked to me much older, you know?? 'Cause it was the 1970s and everyone in those movies was wearing thin ties.? And it's in black and white and it's like another world.? But I remember seeing Mississippi and finding the film striking. Largely because of Booker Wright."

Frank De Felitta had set out for Mississippi to make his film in the Spring of 1965--a perilous time in the Civil Rights Era.? It was less than a year after the murders of three Civil Rights workers who'd been helping Mississippi blacks register to vote.? Nearly 40 black churches had been burned to the ground in Mississippi the previous summer. And the Delta cotton town of Greenwood-- where Frank ultimately shot much of his film-- had seen plenty of trouble. Ten years earlier, Emmit Till?a 15-year-old visiting from Chicago--had been lynched nearby for whistling at a white woman. And Greenwood was home to Byron de la Beckwith--a man who, at the time, had already been twice tried and acquitted for the murder of Civil Rights leader Medgar Evers. Frank knew it would be a dangerous undertaking.

Former NBC News producer Frank De Felitta recalls a time he and his film crew faced some real danger in 1960s Mississippi. This web exclusive is part of the Dateline report 'Finding Booker's Place' from Sunday, July 15th, at 7pm/6c.

"The FBI scared me," Frank remembers. "They told me, 'We think you're crazy. You're not going to be welcomed. And we can't help you. All we can give you are some phone numbers. All throughout Mississippi we have agents.'"

According to Frank, Booker Wright came close to not even being in the film because Frank never intended to interview blacks.

"The whole idea of the Mississippi picture was not to do the story of black angst. We know that.? We were trying to see whether Mississippians, white Mississippians, can reconcile themselves to a better way of treating the blacks."

For weeks Frank De Filleta says he wandered around Greenwood, sampling white opinion. For the most part, whites defended segregation and told Frank that they believed blacks were happy with the status quo.

"I feel that God had a purpose in creating the races separate," one middle-aged white woman told Frank and his crew.?? "I am so proud of negroes who are so proud of being negroes. They are what God made them.? And I'm proud of being white because I am what my white race has made me. I am white today because my parents practiced segregation."

When Frank gathered the town's leaders, they told him they thought the races were getting along just fine in Greenwood.? "I think our colored people are very happy, extremely happy here in Mississippi," said one of them.? "I think they feel the same way about us."

Then one day, a member of Frank's crew suggested that he meet a black waiter who worked at a ?whites only? restaurant in Greenwood.

"He came to me one day and said, 'I got a wonderful black man.? His name is Booker Wright.? And he's a waiter at Lusco's Restaurant.? And what he does, is a minstrel scene.? He does a singsong of the menu.? And that's the only menu they have.? People wanna know the menu, they get, 'Booker, go tell 'em.'? And he'll sing them the song of the menu. And it's absolutely delightful.'"

Once Frank saw Booker Wright perform the menu recitation, he arranged to film the routine the next day. So Booker Wright recited the menu for Frank's camera. Then, without warning, he shifted gears and launched into a monologue that had been 40 years in the making:

"Now that's what my customers, I say my customers are expecting from me," he began. "Some people nice. Some is not. Some call me Booker. Some call me John. Some call me Jim. Some call me @!$%#! All of that hurts but you have to smile. The meaner the man be the more you have to smile, even though your're crying on the inside.

"You're wondering what else can I do. Sometimes he'll tip you, sometimes he'll say, ?I'm not gonna tip that @!$%#, he don't look for no tip.? I say, 'Yes sir, thank you.'? I'm trying to make a living."

For nearly two minutes, Booker Wright, spoke straight to the camera, and straight from the heart.?????????

"Night after night I lay down and I dream about what I had to go through with. I don't want my children to have to go through with that. I want them to get the job they feel qualified. That's what I'm struggling for," Booker concluded.

"I went there to photograph a minstrel show," Frank says, "And I stayed there to hear a man talking about his life and what his dreams are. And it was so moving."

But now, Frank De Fellita says he was confronted with a classic documentarian's conundrum. On the one hand, he knew he had great material for his film. On the other hand, he knew including Booker Wright's comments in his film could place Booker in grave danger since Mississippi was such a hot spot for racial violence and intimidation at that time.

"I said to him, 'Well, look, this is brave of you to say that, but this movie will go all over the country. They'll see it and they could come and kill you.'? He said, 'Well, so be it. I want to be heard.'? I said, 'If you change your mind, you can call me and say, ?Don't show it.???

Booker Wright never changed his mind, and just as Frank had feared, the reaction in Greenwood once the film aired was swift and harsh. Booker lost his job at the all-white restaurant where he'd worked for 25 years, and he was badly beaten.

"He found himself in the hospital the next morning," Frank remembers. "They beat him something terrible.? He was wounded all over his body. They didn't kill him. That, to me, was amazing that they didn't kill him.?

"I called him and got him in the hospital," Frank says.? "I said, 'I'm coming down to see you.' He goes, 'No, no. I've done enough for you. I don't ever want to see you ever again.' I said, 'What's wrong? I'm a friend.' He said, 'It's okay, you're not really allowed to come see me.' He said that would just add too much fire to the whole thing."

And that was the last time Frank ever spoke to Booker.

And that?s where Yvette Johnson?s part of the story comes in.? Booker Wright was Yvette?s grandfather, but she never knew him. He died a year before she was born, and she grew up in California, far from her extended family in Mississippi.? As an adult, Yvette found herself longing to know more about her family's history. In 2007, after the birth of her second son, Yvette decided to take the initiative.

"I have a fantastic Aunt Vera who loves to tell stories," Yvette says. "I called her one afternoon and just asked her 1,000 questions.? And she shared her whole life with me, which was fantastic, and through that I could see sort of the story of the south. But she also shared with me the story of her father, the sort of person he was like. There was a definite shift in her tone when she talked about Booker Wright.? And it was like a seed was planted.? And I just wanted to know more about him."

But try as she might, there was little Yvette could learn about her grandfather. He'd been born on a plantation and taken from his mother at a young age to be raised by another family. Though illiterate, Booker had managed by sheer force of personality to get a job at Lusco's Restaurant in Greenwood, Mississippi at the age of 14. He rose through the ranks to become a waiter at the restaurant, and was beloved by his white customers for the way he recited the menu. Yvette was told that through thrift and hard work, Booker saved enough money to open his own cafe on the black side of town. He called it ?Booker's Place.?

Yvette says, "He was a well-respected businessman who had found sort of a balance between being successful as a waiter in the white community where he was known, enjoyed, cared about --he had what many whites at the time would have called friends. But he also was very well-respected in the black community because he had his own restaurant. "

Yvette might have stopped her family search there, satisfied that her grandfather had persevered and succeeded against the odds, except for one thing. Her grandfather, she was told, had once appeared on television during the height of the Civil Rights turmoil in Mississippi and said something rather inflamatory. Yvette didn't know what he said, or when or where the film might have aired.

"I thought it was like the 5pm news", Yvette says. "Just, like, you know, between the weather and someone's house burning down, that they'd stopped this black guy on the street."?????????????

Years of searching for the missing snippet of her grandfather speaking on camera had yielded nothing. But in March of 2011,the film found Yvette.

Raymond De Fellita had decided to make a sequel to his father's Mississippi film, and was trying to track down Booker Wright's descendants, to see what had become of the children Booker had spoken of so movingly.? When Ray found Yvette, he sent her the footage she had heard about, but never seen.

"I was amazed that it was the piece that it was", Yvette says of first seeing Booker's speech. "It wasn't sort of an angry moment, not thinking about the consequences. He knew what he was doing.

"My heart broke for him as I watched it and he talked about the daily humiliation. And part of me wanted to sort of reach back and comfort him. I still didn't really understand 1965 Greenwood, I didn't realize how much jeopardy he was putting himself in by saying those things."

Yvette was hooked. Within weeks of meeting Ray, the two of them were off to Mississippi with a film crew in tow.? They set out to see how Greenwood had changed since Booker's time, and to find out what legacy, if any, Booker--and Frank DeFelitta--had left behind.

"You know, it was great," says Ray. "To actually envision my dad in 1965 there, and I'm actually sitting in the same restaurant.? I'm wandering around with a film crew in the same town.? That's the part of the magic ride of filmmaking."

Ray De Felitta and David Zellerford discuss the significance of the Tallahatchie Flats ? old sharecropper's cabins given new life as tourist lodgings. This web exclusive is part of the Dateline report 'Finding Booker's Place' from Sunday, July 15th, at 7pm/6c.

And being in Greenwood brought Yvette new understanding of Booker's legacy in that town. "The impact of what he said was really felt in the white community because so many whites knew him, so many whites felt they had friendship with him," she says.? "And to hear him say, 'No this isn't friendship. This is humiliation for me...' It was a wake-up call."

Ray's film about the experience--"Booker's Place"--premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival this spring.??? It's now also available on-line.

Coincidentally, a Dateline NBC producer had also found that old documentary about Mississippi deep in the NBC News vaults.? Drawn to the power of Booker's words, he, too, decided to set out for Greenwood, Mississippi last, to discover what the town had become and what had become of Booker's descendants.? Along the way he found Frank, and Ray, and Yvette, and told their story too--which is now also the story of NBC's reporting on race relations in America, then, and now.?

The result is an episode of Dateline--"Finding Booker's Place", airing Sunday, July 15th, at 7pm/6c --a powerful look back at a troubled time in America's past, and a look at race relations in present day Greenwood, Mississippi.? Booker Wright's words come alive again, too, in the broadcast, as all the people who Booker touched remember an ordinary man who had a remarkable moment.

"I think sometimes in life there are these magical moments and you don't know when one is coming," says Yvette.? "But I just think you know when you're in it. And it's time to stand up? for what you believe and to express what matters to you.? And if you don't seize the opportunity, you feel like you've compromised yourself.? And so to me that's the biggest takeaway: if we just keep our eyes open and if we're willing to take a chance, to take a risk, then we can all make a difference.?

Ford And State Farm Partner To Lower Insurance Premiums Based On Driving Habits [Future Of Retail]

Our latest Future Of Retail Report looks at the trend of Service With An Opt-In. One manifestation of this theme is a recent partnership between Ford Motor Company and State Farm Insurance to implement a system where a driver?s behavior on the road determines the amount they pay for insurance. Instead of calculating insurance costs based on the predominate statistical analysis model, State Farm leverages a technology solution to collect data about how often an individual drives, how fast they go, and their average driving distance.

The collaboration is made possible through Ford?s current dashboard platform, the SYNC app, which records pertinent driving data and communicates it with the corresponding smartphone application. Ford estimates that people who drive the national average of 1,000 miles per month can look to save 10 percent on insurance premiums, and a low-mileage driver could save up to 40 percent.

Find the best urban block in South Florida -- and tell us

I?ve lived in South Florida for 42 years. For most of that time, I endured sniping from friends and colleagues from places like New York or San Francisco about my home: Great weather, sure; beautiful beaches, of course; nice suburbs ? heck, nothing but suburbs.

But no soul. No center. No neighborhoods or blocks with the mix of amenities ? housing, employment, transportation, street life, architecture, culture ? that creates rich urban life.

That began to change throughout our three-county region during the past five to 10 years, though our awareness ? and appreciation of what it can do to build community ? has been more confined to architects and planners than the public at large.

South Florida?s Best Blocks is an attempt to engage the broader community in that discussion.

This endeavor began with Matt Haggman, Miami program director for the Knight Foundation and a former Herald reporter, and Andrew Frey, a planner, lawyer and urbanist who started a nonprofit organization called The Townhouse Center.

About three months ago, Frey reached out with an idea to get people talking about great urban blocks and quality of life. A note from Frey, back in April: What if we put together some criteria for what makes a great urban block, offered a little prize money and ?unleashed people to see their urban areas in a new way and document previously overlooked exemplary urbanism right in our own backyard, rather than in New York or Paris.??

Today, that idea becomes a contest to identify the best urban blocks in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.

It starts with a story on Page 1 from Herald reporter Andres Viglucci, who has covered urban issues in South Florida for more than two decades. In it, he explains what makes a great urban block and how to find one. Our public radio colleagues at 91.3 FM will air stories on the concept and the contest Monday on the WLRN-Miami Herald News. We?ll do follow-up stories over the next month.

You are asked to nominate your favorite urban block through the Miami Herald/WLRN Public Insight Network at www.miamiherald/bestblock. Once you register, you?ll get instructions on how to submit a photo or video telling the story of your block, though you can also enter with a 250-word description.

The photos and videos will be available to all through YouTube and Instagram, and we?ll give people an opportunity to weigh in on your suggestions.

And we?ve assembled a jury that incudes some of South Florida?s most knowledgeable urbanists to evaluate the nominees. By September, thanks to a Knight Foundation grant to the Townhouse Center, the photos and videos judged best will be eligible for prizes. The best block in each county will be recognized with a special event.

To succeed, we need you to participate. Matt Haggman?s Twitter bio (@matthaggman) describes Knight?s mission and ours in holding this contest: ?Promoting an informed and engaged Miami.??

So engage with us. The conversation you create will highlight some special spots ? and get all of us thinking about how to make South Florida better.

For the Best in Camping, Fishing, And Outdoors Visit Cabela's

Long recognized as the world's foremost outfitter, Cabela's specialty retail chain, by most accounts, is a sportsman's paradise. Clearly, it represents a haven for all outdoor enthusiasts, catering not only to recreational pursuits, such as fishing, hunting, boating, shooting and ATV riding, but also to far-reaching activities, including camping, hiking and related hobbies like bird watching and astronomy. For those who enjoy outdoor life, Cabela's has everything under one roof, outfitting shoppers for 50 years with rugged and practical clothing and equipment to enhance their recreational interests. With excellent customer service and stores throughout the U.S., print catalogs and a user-friendly website, this Sidney, Nebraska-based company has become a well-known American brand, synonymous with successful retailing.

A trip to a Cabela's retail establishment easily resembles a fun-filled family excursion, with interior displays that are far from ordinary. Moreover, the stores themselves are designed to look like woodsy mountain retreats of stone and log, their facades promising a unique experience that will entice visitors to get equipped to "play" outside, no matter the season. While stores may vary slightly, once inside, a wonderland unfolds, revealing displays of museum quality taxidermy featuring bears, deer and geese. Aquariums, ponds, murals and mountain exhibits add to the visual delights, while a restaurant and multiple treat kiosks satisfy other tastes. There is even a gun library for those with a thirst for knowledge, and a travel service offers trip-planning assistance for adventurers more interested in safaris than beach resorts and palm trees. Since nothing about Cabelas' stores is small, with massive exterior bronze sculptures of wildlife and gigantic interior showrooms, it's easy to forget one is not outdoors.

Cabela's sells a lot of clothing, tastefully displayed for each sex and age group, also broken down by particular interest categories. For example, men will find hunting clothing featuring every garment a hunter would require for comfort, warmth and practicality, from outerwear to socks. This contrasts with a casual section dedicated to t-shirts, shorts and other relaxed garments and accessories for everyday use. Footwear, from athletic shoes to hunting boots and waders, is also given its due. Similarly, women can browse through an array of active-wear, sleepwear and accessories, in addition to apparel suited to camping, fishing and hunting. They can also view a variety of sandals, hiking boots and comfortable sheepskin slippers. There is plenty for children too, geared to the outdoors or practical comfort. Moreover, well-made footwear enables kids to go hunting or hiking alongside dad. And where else could parents find Berber fleece baby mittens or a toddler sized "camo" snowsuit?

Cabelas' retail prices are reasonable, but there are also frequent sales and promotions. These promotions are not only on off-season items. Thus, the current fishing gear sale is not unusual. Moreover, there are weekly specials. Current specials features jackets, jeans, hiking shorts and pants, as well as a bevy of household items, including bedding. Additionally, in the "Bargain Cave" are cabin and woodsy home furnishings, GPS devices, boating, archery and ATV gear, clothing and accessories, to name a sampling of those promoted as "rock bottom deals." Savings run as much as 70%. When ordering via the website, a $5 shipping special is in force through mid-June, just in time for Father's Day. The best deal for many loyal customers is obtaining a Cabela's Club Visa, its associated rewards program earning free gear in exchange for unwavering patronage.

So, when looking for a novel place to explore, a trip to Cabela's will most likely result in something every member of the family will enjoy. Along the way, it might also promote a healthy interest in camping, hiking, hunting, boating or just getting outside for a change of pace. That is probably the intent of a retail organization that clearly has arisen out of a passion for the outdoors.

(AP) ? Officials say four thrill-seekers are being treated for cuts and bruises but no one was gored as thousands of runners packed the streets of the San Fermin festival, eager to share in the adrenaline-fueled experience of this year's final running of the bulls.

Doctor Ignacio Iribarren, spokesman for Pamplona's Navarra hospital, said only four runners had been admitted for treatment ? two with head concussions, and two with arm and leg injuries.

The run, which featured large bulls of the Torrehandilla ranch, took just two minutes and 33 seconds to cover the 849-meter (928-yard) course from the holding stables just outside the city walls to a central bullring. On average, the run takes just over three minutes.

The festival in this northern city dates back to the late 16th century.

RIM Windows Phone 8 concepts revealed

RIM?s troubles have been well documented and a recent report suggested that the Canadian BlackBerry manufacturer might consider dropping their ten-year BlackBerry plan in favour of a switch to Microsoft?s Windows Phone 8 platform.

That could still prove to be an accurate assumption, especially given the delays on the BlackBerry 10 platform and artist Michal Bonikowsi decided to cook up some concept images of what such a device could look like.

We?ve gotta admit, the design is fantastic and despite running Windows, it features a lot of ?RIM? design to it. We wouldn?t mind seeing a device like this launch running BlackBerry 10 either.

House vote on Russia trade bill in doubt

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Congress appears increasingly unlikely to approve a controversial bill to upgrade trade relations with Russia before the November elections, despite a push by the White House and U.S. business groups for votes this month.

"I think practically speaking no one expects Congress to deal with (permanent normal trade relations) before the lame-duck" session after the elections, said Gary Hufbauer, a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, referring to the period between the November 6 congressional elections and the start of the new Congress in January, 2013.

"I think there's a background fear that this will become a political football if the House moves forward," Hufbauer said.

Congress is under pressure to lift a Cold War human rights provision known as the Jackson-Vanik amendment and approve "permanent normal trade relations," or PNTR, because of Russia's expected entry into the World Trade Organization in August.

If it does not act, Russia could deny U.S. firms some of the market-opening concessions it made to join the WTO, putting those companies at a disadvantage to foreign competitors in one of the world's 10-largest economies.

However, the push to pass the legislation comes at a low point in U.S.-Russia relations, with many U.S. lawmakers angry over Moscow's support for the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and questioning Russia's commitment to democracy and human rights.

"Members are rightly concerned over recent developments in Russia, as well as Russia's policies with respect to Syria and Iran. This makes it incumbent upon the President to show leadership and for these issues to be addressed in a bipartisan fashion, enabling PNTR to move forward," a House Republican aide said.

Jackson-Vanik, passed in 1974, tied favorable U.S. tariff rates on Russian goods to the rights of Russian Jews to emigrate freely. The legislation is mostly symbolic now because both Democratic and Republican administrations have judged Russia to be in compliance since the 1990s. Even so, the measure is at odds with WTO rules requiring countries to treat all other members equally on an unconditional basis.

With less than 15 legislative days before Congress takes its traditional month-long August recess, business groups are pushing for lawmakers to act.

"We don't want U.S. companies on the outside looking in when Russia joins the WTO this summer," said Christopher Wenk, international policy director at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

But Representative Dave Camp, the Republican chairman of the House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee, has not introduced PNTR legislation and House Republican leaders have not made passing the bill a clear priority.

Also unclear is whether Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney supports approval of PNTR. His campaign did not respond to emails asking about his position. In contrast, the White House has made approval of the legislation a top trade priority.

An industry source said Romney assured a group of corporate CEOs last month that he supported the legislation. However, earlier this year he called Russia the "number one geopolitical foe" of the United States, making it awkward for him to lead a charge on PNTR.

MAGNITSKY BILL

Many lawmakers also are loathe to lift the Jackson-Vanik amendment without passing new legislation to punish Russia for perceived human rights abuses.

That has led to the "Magnitsky bill" already passed by committees in both the House and Senate. The bill is named after Sergei Magnitsky, an anti-corruption Russian lawyer who died in 2009 after a year in Russian jails.

The House version would deny visas and freeze the assets of Russians linked to Magnitsky's death, as well as those of other human rights abusers in Russia. The Senate version would extend the sanctions to human rights abusers anywhere in the world.

Russian officials have warned the legislation would further inflame relations. But many U.S. lawmakers are undeterred.

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, a Democrat, has promised to incorporate the Magnitsky legislation into PNTR, which his committee could vote on as early as next week.

But some question whether Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a fellow Democrat, would schedule a Senate vote without a clear signal from the House that it will proceed.

Camp has called for a "clean" bill without the Magnitsky legislation but has not found a Democratic co-sponsor for that approach.

"Chairman Camp remains committed to moving a clean PNTR bill through his committee as soon as the administration is able to identify a successful bipartisan path forward," Ways and Means spokeswoman Sarah Swinehart said on Thursday.

The Obama administration and business groups also prefer a clean bill, but few people expect PNTR to pass without the Magnitsky legislation.

"Nobody quite knows how that's going to be packaged, whether it's part of the PNTR bill or a separate bill, or whether it's going to be extended to cover corruption as well as human rights and therefore pick up some of Putin's buddies," Hufbauer said.

The business community's worst fear is the bills will move separately and the Magnitsky legislation will pass and PNTR will fail.

Bill Reinsch, president of the National Foreign Trade Council, which represents big U.S. exporters like Boeing and Caterpillar, said there was still time to pass PNTR this month if House Republican leaders decided they want to move.

"There's always time up there to do something if the will is there to do it. And so we continue to hope that the will is there and they'll get it done," Reinsch said.
