Chemists Outrun Laws in War on Synthetic Drugs
Synthetic mimics of marijuana, dissociative drugs and stimulants -- such as the "bath salts" allegedly consumed by Randy Eugene, the Florida man shot after a horrific face-eating assault -- are growing in popularity and hard to control. Every time a compound is banned, overseas chemists synthesize a new version tweaked just enough to evade a law's letter.

Best Beach Reads 2012: Green Home And Gardening Books For The Summer

From Mother Nature Network's Matt Hickman:

Now that I have my first official sunburn of the season ? a 5-mile bike ride followed by a few rounds of skee ball on the boardwalk will do that to you ? I thought it would be appropriate to feature a few items that I'm eyeing for one of my favorite non-biking/skee ball-related summertime activities: catching up on my reading.

Below you'll find a dozen freshly (or fresh-ish) released or soon-to-be-released summer books covering sustainable home design, building and architecture, gardening, and renovation/remodeling. I've also included hotly anticipated releases from both the first lady of the United States and the first lady of home decor catalog snark, Molly Erdman (seriously, if you've never met "Gary" and "Elaine" before, than this summer is the perfect time to do so). While they may not be ideal beach reads in terms of physical size and subject matter, there's nothing stopping you from settling down with these inspirational and informative tomes out on the porch swing, backyard hammock, or from the comfort of a bench in a local park.

Is there a green home- or garden-centric book that you're looking forward to plowing through spending some quality time with this summer?

Book Marketing on the Web for Authors or Business Professionals ...

Photo of book cover for How to Succeed in College

Whether you are marketing your book as a dedicated fiction/nonfiction author or as a business professional promoting your expertise for the PR benefit of your company, the principles of marketing on the Internet are the same:

First, you share not sell. In other words, you do NOT tweet on Twitter ?Buy my book? nor do you post on Facebook ?You must read my book.?

You share your expertise with your online connections, which ?encourages? them to check out your website or your Facebook Page or your Twitter profile. (Your Pinterest boards may also be of interest.)

Second, you share the related information of other people on the web ? information that is compatible with who you are and your brand, book, business or cause.

For example, people who might be your competitors in your town can become your collaborators on the Internet. This is because the Internet provides access to huge potential audiences so there is usually enough business ? or book-buying expenditures ? to go around.

One of the collaborative sites online is Triberr.com ? where you can become a member of a group of bloggers who tweet the links of new blog posts written by other members of the group.

What I especially like about Triberr is that I can decide on an individual basis if I want to tweet a blog post. For example, even if I like a blogger yet do not think a particular post is good for my Twitter followers, I do not have to tweet that post link.

Third, you can use your Twitter, Facebook, and other social media connections to be a news filter for you on subject areas such as book marketing, book publishing, the newest ebook information, etc.

While at first glance this activity may not seem to advance your own book promotion, it can keep you informed of new opportunities as well as potential sand traps.

Fourth, the more you know about book marketing, the more you can ?blend? your pool of information to figure out strategies for your specific fiction and nonfiction books and ebooks.

Getting information from multiple sources helps prevent a book author from taking one person?s advice as the ultimate truth. The fact is that there is NOT a one-size-fits-all book marketing strategy for everyone, especially given the range of fiction and nonfiction topics.

And couple with this is the fact that things on the Internet change so quickly. For example, Amazon Studios (Amazon is now in the film and TV comedy business) overnight changed from a free 18-month option to a free 45-day option for submissions. That is a big difference that anyone interested in submitting to Amazon Studios would want to know.

Or what about the fact that Amazon?s POD publisher, CreateSpace, now allows CreateSpace authors? books to be sold on the European Amazon sites once an author has signed up (for free) for this opportunity? This is the kind of information you will know about if you are involved in book marketing on the web with communities of other authors who share good info.

The bottom line? Nowadays, unless you are a very well-known and successful author, you cannot afford to ignore online book marketing.

And the corollary of this is that you cannot afford to only have your books in physical formats.

Check that you own the electronic rights to previously published books of yours ? and then get them converted into ebooks asap. (You can then participate in author forums discussing the pros and cons, for example, of participating in Amazon?s Kindle Select option.)

Book marketing has never been so open to experimentation and control by authors themselves. Take advantage of these opportunities now!

PFT: Driver says he has 1-2 more years left

Miami Dolphins MinicampGetty Images

Plenty of teams said ?no? to Hard Knocks, for various reasons.? The Dolphins agreed to do it.

On Tuesday, coach Joe Philbin discussed the situation, calling it a ?football decision.?

Seriously.

?We?re excited that NFL Films and HBO has chosen the Miami Dolphins to appear on Hard Knocks,? Philbin said, via the video box on the right rail of the site.? ?I want you to know a couple things about the decision.? Number one, it was a football decision.? It was made by the football operations staff.? Our owner, [Stephen Ross], supported our decision but in no way, shape, or form forced us to make this decision.?

Many will believe otherwise, especially since G.M. Jeff Ireland grew up in the Bill Parcells school of ultra-secrecy.

But as the Dolphins struggle to generate interest in the team via conventional means (you know, by winning more games than they lose), the team has to do something to get people sufficiently engaged to buy tickets to the games.? Thus, the Dolphins are now more available to the media ? and they?ll be even more available once the NFL Films cameras and microphones show up.

To the extent that the appearance arises from a football decision, Philbin didn?t really articulate a football reason.? He said the that show will ?showcase our players? and provide a ?great opportunity for us to communicate with our fans.?? While those concerns reflect prudent business reasons, there?s no obvious basis for the move, from a football standpoint.

In contrast, Vince Lombardi liked having NFL Films camera crews around because it made his players work harder.? If that?s the basis for the ?football decision,? why not say so?

And so the Dolphins will deny that the move was driven by dollars and cents, and the rest of us won?t believe them.? But at least we finally know who the team will be, even if the end result likely will be far less compelling than if the Jets, Saints, Broncos, Colts, or Redskins had done it.

Juan Carlos Oviedo Suspended: Marlins Pitcher Out Eight Weeks For Age, Identity Fraud

NEW YORK (AP) ? Miami Marlins pitcher Juan Carlos Oviedo has been suspended for eight weeks by Major League Baseball for age and identity fraud.

The reliever can participate in extended spring training and will be eligible to play in the major leagues July 23. He'll be eligible for one rehabilitation assignment in the minor leagues for a maximum 16 days.

Oviedo was caught playing under the fake name of Leo Nunez and spent the offseason in the Dominican Republic clearing up his immigration status. He said Friday he had received a visa from the U.S. government and would be in Florida on Monday.

Now 30, a year older than previously listed, he played as Nunez for seven major league seasons and had 36 saves and a 4.06 ERA in 68 games for the Marlins in 2011.

Potentially civilization-ending super-eruptions may have surprisingly short fuses

ScienceDaily (May 30, 2012) ? Enormous volcanic eruptions with potential to end civilizations may have surprisingly short fuses, researchers have discovered.

These eruptions are known as super-eruptions because they are more than 100 times the size of ordinary volcanic eruptions like Mount St. Helens. They spew out tremendous flows of super-heated gas, ash and rock capable of blanketing entire continents and inject enough particulate into the stratosphere to throw the global climate into decade-long volcanic winters. In fact, there is evidence that one super-eruption, which took place in Indonesia 74,000 years ago, may have come remarkably close to wiping out the entire human species.

Geologists generally believe that a super-eruption is produced by a giant pool of magma that forms a couple of miles below the surface and then simmers for 100,000 to 200,000 years before erupting. But a new study suggests that once they form, these giant magma bodies may only exist for a few thousand years, perhaps only a few hundred years, before erupting.

"Our study suggests that when these exceptionally large magma pools form they are ephemeral and cannot exist very long without erupting," said Guilherme Gualda, the assistant professor of earth and environmental sciences at Vanderbilt University who directed the study, which appears in the May 30 issue of the journal Public Library of Science ONE.

The study was performed on the remnants of the Bishop Tuff, the Long Valley super-eruption that occurred in east-central California 760,000 years ago. Using the latest methods for dating the process of magma formation, Gualda and his colleagues found several independent lines of evidence that indicate the magma pool formed within a few thousand years, perhaps within a few hundred years, before it erupted, covering half of the North American continent with smoldering ash.

These giant magma pools tend to be shaped like pancakes and are 10 to 25 miles in diameter and one half to three miles deep. In the beginning, the molten rock in these pools is largely free from crystals and bubbles. After they form, however, crystals and bubbles form gradually and progressively change the magma's physical and chemical properties, a process that halts when an eruption takes place. As far as geologists can tell, no such giant crystal-poor magma body currently exists that is capable of producing a super-eruption. The research team believes this may be because these magma bodies exist for a relatively short time rather than persisting for hundreds of thousands of years as previously thought.

According to Gualda, the estimates for the 100,000 year-plus lifetimes of these giant magma bodies appears to be an artifact of the method that geologists have used to make them. The measurements have been made using zircon crystals. Zircons are commonplace in volcanic rocks and they contain small amounts of radioactive uranium and thorium, which decay into lead at a set rate, allowing scientists to accurately determine when the crystals formed. They are extremely useful for many purposes because they can survive most geologic processes. However, the fact that zircons can withstand the heat and the forces found in a magma chamber means that they are not good at recording the lifetimes of crystal-poor magma bodies.

Gualda and his colleagues took a different approach in his studies of the Bishop Tuff. They determined crystallization rates of quartz -- the most abundant mineral in the deposits -- to gather information about the lifespan of these giant magma bodies. They developed four independent lines of evidence that agreed that the formation process took less than 10,000 years and most likely between 500 to 3,000 years before the eruption. They suggest that the zircon crystal measurements record the extensive changes that take place in the crust required before the giant magma bodies can begin forming as opposed to the formation itself.

"The fact that the process of magma body formation occurs in historical time, instead of geological time, completely changes the nature of the problem," said Gualda. Instead of concluding that there is virtually no risk of another super-eruption for the foreseeable future because there are no suitable magma bodies, geologists need to regularly monitor areas where super-eruptions are likely, such as Yellowstone, to provide advanced warning if such a magma body begins to form.

According to a 2005 report by the Geological Society of London, "Even science fiction cannot produce a credible mechanism for averting a super-eruption. We can, however, work to better understand the mechanisms involved in super-eruptions, with the goal of being able to predict them ahead of time and provide a warning for society. Preparedness is the key to mitigation of the disastrous effects of a super-eruption."

Vanderbilt doctoral student Ayla S. Pamukcu, Mark S. Ghiorso of OFM Research, and Alfred T. Anderson Jr.,Stephen R. Sutton and Mark L. Rivers from the University of Chicago participated in the study, which was supported by grants from the National Science Foundation.

Aaron Sorkin talks about future Steve Jobs movie, impact of technology on his writing

Aaron Sorkin at D10

You don't have to look far to get a grasp on who Aaron Sorkin is -- he wrote A Few Good Men, The American President, The West Wing, Moneyball and The Social Network, for starters -- and he showed up at D10 to talk creative media, how the digital age impacts his writing and his impending movie about late Apple CEO Steve Jobs. While not involving hard technology news, the interview was exceedingly refreshing, and it delved deep into the world of tech as it impacts his upcoming show about a fictional newsroom (The Newsroom on HBO). The highlights included a frank quote that whoever ends up playing Jobs in his movie -- not to be confused with the one already in production with Ashton Kutcher -- will have to be "good, and intelligent." He also confessed to being fully engaged in the "three screens" movement, but wasn't too prideful to admit that he taps into the brain of his 11-year old daughter for lots of technological help. Pretty wild for a guy that many would label "genius." For more from the interview, head on past the break.

New findings on astronaut vision loss

ScienceDaily (May 30, 2012) ? Could vision changes experienced by astronauts be linked to a vitamin B-12 or folate deficiency? While investigating the vision changes recently identified in astronauts, nutritional assessment data showed similarities to symptoms that occur with vitamin deficiencies, according to a new study published in the March edition of The Journal of Nutrition.

Approximately 20 percent of astronauts living on the International Space Station have reported post-flight vision changes. Previous research, published in the October 2011 issue of Ophthalmology, identified a possible link between the reported vision changes and increased intracranial pressure caused by shifts in bodily fluids from the lower extremities to the upper part if the body, due to microgravity. This may still be part of the problem, but the new study shows there may be other contributing factors. The findings may provide evidence to help understand why some crew members suffer vision-related problems, while others do not.

The nutrition study included 20 astronauts, with 5 experiencing vision or eye anatomy changes. The investigation collected data from crew urine and blood samples taken before spaceflight, while living aboard the station, and after returning to Earth. The samples taken while living in orbit were kept in the station's Minus-Eighty Degree Freezer, or MELFI, and returned to the ground for analysis.

Comparing the blood analysis with nutritional assessments revealed that crew members experiencing vision changes had consistently lower folate levels and higher levels of metabolites. The comparison suggests the vision changes may be due in part to what's called a "dependent one-carbon metabolic pathway" change.

All About the 1C Pathway

Let's break this down: The human body is like a machine, with many chemical processes taking place to keep cells functioning, which in turn keep the body functioning. These chemical processes use specific pathways to do their job. Everyone has these pathways.

The one-carbon pathway is part of the chemical process the body uses to make DNA, or genetic instructions. The pathways are similar to an assembly line in a factory. If the pathway is not working properly, it gets behind or backs up. This is what happens if there is a vitamin deficiency. Since astronauts participate in dietary and nutritional assessments, researchers were able to rule out common vitamin and nutritional deficiencies.

Enzymes are the workers on the assembly line, and can have different forms -- little changes or variations that occur -- between individuals. These multiple forms are known as polymorphisms. As humans evolve, tiny changes in DNA occur resulting in multiple forms of enzymes. A good example of polymorphisms is blood types -- though blood is blood, there are differences that account for a variety of blood types. Lactose intolerance is another example of polymorphisms in the human body.

Vision Changes

With nutritional deficiencies ruled out, researchers began considering the possibility that polymorphisms, which may be part of the one-carbon pathway, could be causing the vision changes.

Since the folate and metabolite variances in the affected astronauts were seen preflight, there are several theories. These individuals may be more prone to microgravity-induced fluid shifts. They may be affected by small changes in the station's cabin carbon dioxide levels, which are slightly higher than those on Earth. Even small changes in the cabin air mix could increase intracranial pressure. On the other hand, other astronauts exposed to higher carbon dioxide levels did not have vision changes.

In Earth-based studies, the enzyme differences that slow down the pathway causing the backup have been linked to a greater occurrence of migraine headaches and strokes. These types of conditions can be related to increased intracranial pressure.

Results from this investigation also could provide advancements in understanding and treating retinal vascular and optic nerve disorders and diseases on Earth.

"While these results are very exciting, they are preliminary," said Scott Smith, a nutritionist and one of the authors of the recent study from NASA's Johnson Space Center's Nutritional Biochemistry Lab. "The next step is to directly test for the presence of enzyme polymorphisms to verify whether this relates to the vision changes."

"We clearly have identified a piece of the vision puzzle," Smith said. "We now need to go another step forward to assess whether it is a small piece among many others, or a large piece that is a primary cause of this problem. Not only may the results have significant implications for NASA and future astronauts, but the implications for the general population could be profound."

Additional research to expand understanding of how life in space affects astronaut vision is planned, and NASA recently selected eight investigations as part of a broader suite of astronaut health research.

Neuron function restored in brains damaged by Huntington's disease

ScienceDaily (May 29, 2012) ? Researchers from South Korea, Sweden, and the United States have collaborated on a project to restore neuron function to parts of the brain damaged by Huntington's disease (HD) by successfully transplanting HD-induced pluripotent stem cells into animal models.

Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) can be genetically engineered from human somatic cells such as skin, and can be used to model numerous human diseases. They may also serve as sources of transplantable cells that can be used in novel cell therapies. In the latter case, the patient provides a sample of his or her own skin to the laboratory.

In the current study, experimental animals with damage to a deep brain structure called the striatum (an experimental model of HD) exhibited significant behavioral recovery after receiving transplanted iPS cells. The researchers hope that this approach eventually could be tested in patients for the treatment of HD.

"The unique features of the iPSC approach means that the transplanted cells will be genetically identical to the patient and therefore no medications that dampen the immune system to prevent graft rejection will be needed," said Jihwan Song, D.Phil. Associate Professor and Director of Laboratory of Developmental & Stem Cell Biology at CHA Stem Cell Institute, CHA University, Seoul, South Korea and co-author of the study.

The study, published online this week in Stem Cells, found that transplanted iPSCs initially formed neurons producing GABA, the chief inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mammalian central nervous system, which plays a critical role in regulating neuronal excitability and acts at inhibitory synapses in the brain. GABAergic neurons, located in the striatum, are the cell type most susceptible to degeneration in HD.

Another key point in the study involves the new disease models for HD presented by this method, allowing researchers to study the underlying disease process in detail. Being able to control disease development from such an early stage, using iPS cells, may provide important clues about the very start of disease development in HD. An animal model that closely imitates the real conditions of HD also opens up new and improved opportunities for drug screening.

"Having created a model that mimics HD progression from the initial stages of the disease provides us with a unique experimental platform to study Huntington's disease pathology" said Patrik Brundin, M.D., Ph.D., Director of the Center for Neurodegenerative Science at Van Andel Research Institute (VARI), Head of the Neuronal Survival Unit at Lund University, Sweden, and co-author of the study.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative genetic disorder that affects muscle coordination and leads to cognitive decline and psychiatric problems. It typically becomes noticeable in mid-adult life, with symptoms beginning between 35 and 44 years of age. Life expectancy following onset of visual symptoms is about 20 years. The worldwide prevalence of HD is 5-10 cases per 100,000 persons. Key to the disease process is the formation of specific protein aggregates (essentially abnormal clumps) inside some neurons.

If you cannot justify the cost of a thousand-dollar wedding cake, consider contacting a local bakery and inquiring about single-serving portions, like cupcakes or cake pops. Many bakeries can provide wedding cupcakes that come in at 100 calories or less per serving. Other healthier options include gluten-free pastries, no-calorie sweeteners, and icing alternatives, such as meringue or fruit spreads.

Get a wedding planner who can help you get through the whole planning process. Weddings tend to be stressful and many things can go wrong. A professional has seen most of these problems before and can deal with them more effectively than you can. That way your loved ones can enjoy the wedding and the reception with no worries.

Dress any children attending your ceremony in comfortable attire. Dress them in soft, comfortable fabrics that are airy and fit loosely. It's important that any shoes they wear are comfortable, which means new shoes, will need to be broken in. Taking care of these small details will allow children to focus on participation in the wedding instead of fussing with their attire.

Seasonal flowers that are native to your state may not be easy to find at your wedding location, especially if it's a completely different climate. Contact professionals near the destination site to find out which blooms are readily available.

The lighting in your venue should be able to be dimmed. Although this may seem trivial, you want the option of having a low-light setting during your first dance and a more brighter setting for the rest of the celebration. Check out the lighting available at different venues before picking one.

Consider the appearance of your wedding cake when deciding how to display it. For example, if your cake is unusually colorful, match its color to the hue of the fabric underneath it. There are many different styles and options, such as various types of fabrics and textures. It is up to you how to put it all together.

See if you can find a willing helper who can assist you with looking after your equipment and moving it when necessary. They can also be of assistance in rounding everyone up for the group photographs, and this will make sure no one is left out.

Make a detailed itinerary with directions, so guests know when and where the wedding and reception will be held. Inform people of events, like rehearsals, that they are required to attend, so they will be where they are supposed to be at the scheduled time.

Avoid cluttering tables with too many flowers at your reception. Often, flowers interfere with guests being able to converse across the table. Also, some of your guests may have allergies to the flowers. Try putting some scent free candles on your wedding tables.

Place a number of different-sized potted plants throughout the venue in lieu of costly floral arrangements. Use colorful, glazed ceramic pots, or dress up earthy terracotta stoneware with ribbons, decoupage, or decorative paint effects. When the wedding is over, the guests can then take those plants home with them as a favor and have a constant reminder of the new couple.

Trust in others to help you with your wedding plans. It is natural to want to participate in all aspects of planning, especially since your wedding is such a personal affair. You can overdo it though, so you may want a trusted pro who has expertise in this area.

Be sure you have help when trying on wedding dresses. Choose a dress whose style you like but also one that suits your figure. Ask your friend or the sales clerk what they think of it. If you are under 5"4', step away from the normal dress section and make a beeline for the petite dresses. By choosing a gown that is designed for your body type, it will ensure a comfortable fit, making you much happier.

If you want the bride to be happy on her wedding day, it is important that everything meets her standards. Planning the wedding is stressful for the bride, and sub-par results may leave her crushed. In order to prevent your fianc from being upset, ensure that you run everything by her.

If you conduct your wedding in a vacation spot, have a basketful of themed goodies delivered to each guest's room. Useful things that you may include are local attraction pamphlets, a hat, sunglasses, tourist map, and a disposable camera. It may also be nice to give them a guide to a restaurant in the area so they have an easier time finding a place to get food.

Pick out a few special activities for the day, and use them to spice up the mood when needed. Don't just let everyone stand around tapping their feet, waiting for something to happen. Examples of activities could include a volleyball game, or a contest of who can get to know the most people prior to the wedding. You can make your wedding more memorable by planning activities that allow your guests to have fun and interact with each other.

Let your control issues go, and allow your friends and family to get involved in the planning of your wedding. You will more than likely want to control every aspect of your wedding, but it is important to be able to let go of some aspects so that you do not get overly stressed during what should be the happiest time of your life. On the other hand, overdoing it is really possible, and some things are just better left in the hands of expert professionals.

Your assistant will be helping carry equipment around for you so there is no need for them to have any specific photography training. They can help you get group shots of the family too!

Large centerpieces are unnecessary on your tables as they not only eat away at your budget, but serve as an unneeded distraction. Instead of going with a huge table centerpiece that uses up almost the entire table, keep it simple. You do not want your guests to be unable to communicate because there is a large centerpiece in the way.

If not planned well, a joyous wedding occasion can turn disastrous. Follow the advice in this article as you are planning your wedding, and you will see how easy it can be.

Smith, Jones' 'MiB3' zaps 'Avengers' out of No. 1

(AP) ? The comic action heroes of "Men in Black 3" have taken over the weekend box office from the comic-book superheroes of "The Avengers."

According to studio estimates Monday, Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones' latest "Men in Black" installment debuted with $70 million domestically over the four-day Memorial Day weekend, which proved unusually quiet at theaters for Hollywood overall.

Sony's "Men in Black 3" took over the No. 1 spot from Disney's "The Avengers," which had been the top flick for three straight weekends but slipped to second place with $46.9 million domestically.

"Men in Black 3" added $133.2 million overseas for a worldwide total of $203.2 million.

"We took over the world this weekend," said Rory Bruer, Sony's head of distribution. "It's so exciting to see Will and company back in this franchise. I certainly think that most people who've seen the film think it's the best of the franchise."

"The Avengers" raised its domestic total to $523.6 million, making it the No. 4 movie on the all-time domestic revenue chart and only the fourth film to top half a billion dollars. "The Avengers" will quickly pass the No. 3 film, "The Dark Knight" at $533.3 million, leaving only "Avatar" at $760.5 million and "Titanic" at $658.5 million ahead of it.

While it was a good start for "Men in Black 3" and another strong hold for "The Avengers," Memorial Day weekend was the slowest at theaters in more than a decade. Box-office tracker Hollywood.com estimates that overall domestic receipts for the four days will finish at $190 million, the lowest since Memorial Day weekend in 2001, when revenues totaled $185.3 million.

A year ago, Hollywood pulled in a record $276.3 million over Memorial Day weekend, when "The Hangover Part II" debuted with $103.4 million.

So far, Hollywood's summer season has been a one- or two-hit wonder, with only "The Avengers" doing blockbuster business and now "Men in Black 3" joining it with a solid opening.

Other May releases fell far short of expectations, with Johnny Depp and Tim Burton's "Dark Shadows" and the game adaptation "Battleship" swamped in the wake of "The Avengers." ''Battleship" launched in April overseas, though, where its $232 million haul helped make up for its meager $47.1 million total after two weekends domestically.

With domestic revenue at $4.3 billion so far this year, Hollywood remains on a record pace, receipts running 11.3 percent ahead of last year's, according to Hollywood.com. But revenue had been running 20 percent ahead of 2011's earlier this year.

Analysts have said this season could sweep past last year's summer revenue record of $4.4 billion on the strength of such releases as "The Avengers" and its superhero cousins "The Dark Knight Rises" and "The Amazing Spider-Man."

Other than "The Avengers" and "Men in Black 3," summer is off to a slow start.

"After five weeks of summer, to only have two hits, that's tough," said Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian. "We definitely need to slingshot back. I was on record predicting record revenue for this summer, and now I'm getting worried. Summer is only 18 weeks, so we don't have a lot of time, but we do have a lot of big movies coming."

"Men in Black 3" reunites Smith's Agent J and Jones' K for their first big-screen adventure since 2002. The movie co-stars Josh Brolin as the younger Agent K, who is targeted for death by a time-traveling alien that Agent J chases back to the late 1960s.

The weekend's other new wide release, the Warner Bros. fright flick "Chernobyl Diaries," opened far back in the pack at No. 6, with $9.3 million for the four days.

In limited release, Focus Features' first-love comic drama "Moonrise Kingdom" got off to a huge start with $669,486 in four theaters, for a whopping average of $167,371 a cinema. That compares to an average of $16,478 in 4,248 theaters for "Men in Black 3."

Directed by Wes Anderson ("Rushmore," ''Fantastic Mr. Fox"), "Moonrise Kingdom" chronicles the relationship of a troubled boy and girl who run away together in the mid-1960s. The ensemble cast includes Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Bruce Willis, Edward Norton and Tilda Swinton.

"The Avengers" has added $781.9 million overseas, giving it a worldwide total of just over $1.3 billion. The film is closing in on the No. 3 earner worldwide, last year's "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" at $1.33 billion," again with only "Avatar" ($2.8 billion) and "Titanic" ($2.2 billion) ahead of it.

Still, many older films such as "Gone with the Wind," ''Star Wars" and "The Sound of Music" sold more tickets than "The Avengers" and other modern blockbusters. Rising admission prices mean today's movies make more money while selling fewer tickets, especially those that earn much of their cash from pricier 3-D shows, such as "The Avengers."

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Monday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Tuesday.

1. "Men in Black 3," $70 million ($133.2 million international).

2. "The Avengers," $46.9 million ($26.3 million international).

3. "Battleship," $13.8 million ($2.9 million international).

4. "The Dictator," $11.8 million ($11.8 million international).

5. "Dark Shadows," $9.4 million ($13.1 million international).

6. "Chernobyl Diaries," $9.3 million.

7. "What to Expect When You're Expecting," $8.9 million ($1.5 million international).

8. "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," $8.2 million ($853,000 international).

9. "The Hunger Games," $2.9 million ($800,000 international).

10. "Think Like a Man," $1.8 million.

___

Estimated weekend ticket sales at international theaters (excluding the U.S. and Canada) for films distributed overseas by Hollywood studios, according to Rentrak:

1. "Men in Black 3," $133.2 million.

2. "The Avengers," $26.3 million.

3. "Dark Shadows," $13.1 million.

4. "The Dictator," $11.8 million.

5. "All about My Wife," $4.2 million.

6. "American Reunion," $3.3 million.

7. "Battleship," $2.9 million.

8. "The Lucky One," $2 million.

9. "What to Expect When You're Expecting," $1.5 million.
