Windows 8.1: Little Fixes, Same Big Ideas (Oh, and a Start Button)

Windows 8.1: Little Fixes, Same Big Ideas (Oh, and a Start Button)

The good news: If you liked Windows 8, its first major update is going fix a ton of the little things that bothered you. The bad news: You might not like Windows 8. And there's nothing here that will change that. At least there's a Start button!

Microsoft today is giving a sneak peak at Windows 8.1, previously known as Windows Blue. And while it may not be the drastic walkback of the Metro design theory you were hoping for, there's plenty here to like. Starting with:

The Start Button

Yes, the rumors are true. It's back. It'll be there by default, in both desktop mode and in your lovely tiled rubric. See? There it is, right there in the lower lefthand corner:

Windows 8.1: Little Fixes, Same Big Ideas (Oh, and a Start Button)

Missed you, friend! It won't always be immediately visible in whatever app you're using, but you're never more than a mouse-over away from the Start screen. It's not quite the robust Start menu people were clamoring for, but it's... uh... a start.

Another win for die-hards: You can boot directly into desktop mode now. So long, flat design! Or, if you prefer a best-of-both-worlds approach, you can display your tiles over the traditional desktop background. Baby steps.

All About You

The Start button (rightly) is going to garner the most attention, but Windows 8.1 also features a bevy of smaller tweaks that let you better configure your PC to your needs. Much of this is aesthetic; you've got more control over your Start screen background, make your Lock screen a slideshow of pictures if you want to turn Surface into the world's most expensive digital picture frame, and uninstall, resize, or move apps in groups instead of one at a time.

Windows 8.1: Little Fixes, Same Big Ideas (Oh, and a Start Button)

There's less presumption in Windows 8.1, too. New apps don't automatically wind up on your Start screen; they instead get shimmied off to an apps view, from which you can choose where and how to pin it. Likewise, you can now open photos from Mail, SkyDrive, or the Camera app to edit them.

Eye on the SkyDrive

Microsoft's also using Windows 8.1 to give SkyDrive a major boost; it's more deeply integrated than ever before, storing all of your settings and apps automatically to make switching from PC to PC a seamless experience.

Windows 8.1: Little Fixes, Same Big Ideas (Oh, and a Start Button)

You can also save individual files directly to SkyDrive from Windows 8.1, while accessing any of your cloud-based docs from the SkyDrive app, even when offline.

SkyDrive may not get as much hype as the iClouds and Google Drives of the world, but it's a terrific service that deserves the spotlight. It's also, incidentally, Microsoft's key to being a fully integrated?and standalone?ecosystem.

Betting on Bing

Bing is not perfect. In fact, by many measures, it's not even particularly good. But it's going to be everywhere in Windows 8.1, and that may not be the worst thing. By default, the Search charm will provide a global search that spans both the web and your SkyDrive files, apps, and suggested courses of action, all powered by the anti-Google.

Windows 8.1: Little Fixes, Same Big Ideas (Oh, and a Start Button)

Sounds great in theory, and Bing can only get better as more people use it to feed its algorithms. But for much of the Windows 8.1 search experience, you won't have Google as an option. That's going to be problematic for some.

A Fresh Start

The most exciting thing about Windows 8.1 is that it's a clear indication that Microsoft is pushing forward with Metro, not pulling away. Yes, the Start button is a (probably necessary) concession. But it's the only one. None of the rest of these changes give even the slightest whiff of retreat. Good for them.

We'll be able to get a closer look at Windows 8.1's features starting on June 26th; it'll be available as a free update later this year for existing Windows users. Which gives you plenty of time to get comfy with the idea that those tiles aren't going anywhere any time soon. Nor should they.

Most comprehensive analyses of NSAIDs and coxibs

May 29, 2013 ? Researchers have published in the current issue of The Lancet the most comprehensive analyses of the benefits and risks of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which include cyclo-oxygenase-2 inhibitors (coxibs).

Under the direction of the Clinical Trial Service and Epidemiology Studies Unit at the University of Oxford, researchers from around the world conducted a world-wide meta-analyses using individual participant data from 280 trials of NSAIDs vs. placebo and 474 trials of NSAID vs. another NSAID, which involved a total of 353,809 participants and a total of 233,798 person-years. These results address risks and benefits of drugs used for relief of inflammatory arthritis including cardiovascular disease and other relevant outcomes such as gastrointestinal effects.

"The vascular risks of high-dose diclofenac and ibuprofen are comparable to coxibs, while high-dose naproxen is associated with less vascular risk than other NSAIDs," said Charles H. Hennekens, MD, DrPH, the first Sir Richard Doll professor and senior academic advisor to the dean in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University. "Although NSAIDs increase vascular and gastrointestinal risks, their magnitude can be predicted, which may help guide clinical decision-making."

David J. Bjorkman, MD, MSPH, dean of the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine at FAU and a gastroenterologist noted that "these are the most comprehensive analyses ever conducted of the benefits and risks of NSAIDs, which include coxibs, and should help guide healthcare providers in their prescribing patterns."

Hennekens concluded that "from a clinical and policy perspective, the available data suggest that for relief of pain of inflammatory arthritis, naproxen may have the best benefit-to-risk ratio on cardiovascular disease (CVD). In contrast to naproxen, other traditional NSAIDS and coxibs confer similar moderately increased risks of CVD. At present, individual clinical judgments about coxibs and nonselective NSAIDs should not be limited to risks of CVD. They should also include concerns about non-CVD risks, such as gastrointestinal bleeding and other benefits, including improved quality of life resulting from decreases in impairment from musculoskeletal pain syndromes."

Space Diving: Iron Man Meets Star Trek Suit In Development

Vaporware is exactly what this is. The red bull team spent years designing and prepping for their suit, and it was a one off. These guys are going to have a suit production ready by 2016? Hogwash.

Well, to be fair, it was mostly an issue of the capsule, money and not working full time on it. Space suits aren't rocket science. At 60 miles up, starting at a dead stop, you're not going to deal with things like friction heating to any great extent. You just need a pressure suit. That's not the interesting part of what Red Bull did, or what these folks are dong.

(AP Photo/Paul Sancya)

(AP) ? The Chicago Blackhawks began the year with a record-breaking start.

The NHL's best team during the regular season will have to finish the season strong to avoid flopping out of the playoffs in the second round.

Jakub Kindl scored on a power play in the second period, Daniel Cleary had an empty-net goal and Jimmy Howard made 28 saves to help the Detroit Red Wings earn a 2-0 win Thursday night that puts the Blackhawks on the brink of elimination.

After losing Game 1, the seventh-seeded Red Wings have surged into control of the second round series by handing the Blackhawks their first three-game losing streak of the year.

Is Detroit coach Mike Babcock surprised that his team that barely made the playoffs is a win away from the Western Conference finals.

"If you would ask me two months ago, I would be shocked," he acknowledged.

Game 5 is Saturday night in Chicago, where goaltender Corey Crawford is confident the team can win the first of three straight games.

"We've gone on streaks before," Crawford said. "We just have to keep playing hard and it's going to have to turn our way."

Chicago's chances will improve if captain Jonathan Toews can score and keep his cool.

He couldn't do either in Game 4.

When Howard wasn't using his glove or pads to deny Toews, Detroit's skaters were rattling him with a physical presence that made him uncomfortable.

"Eventually, something's got to give," Toews said. "We're too good a team. We've got too much talent.

"For as hard as we're working, something's got to go our way."

Crawford did a solid job in his net, but he couldn't kick his right leg out quick enough to stop Kindl's shot on a power play midway through the second period and he was on the bench in favor of an extra skater when Cleary sealed the victory in the final minute.

"The pressure is on them," Detroit defenseman Jonathan Ericsson said.

Yes, it is.

And, no one in the Windy City will want to extend the series more than Toews.

"We've got to find a way to force a Game 6," he said.

The Blackhawks desperately need Toews to score and lead after he extended his goal drought in a composure-crumbling performance.

Toews was called for three penalties in the second ? two for high-sticking ? and could've gone to the box a fourth time in the period for slashing Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg while an official stood between them.

"Emotions run high in some of these games, and my stick got a little loose there," he said. "I was playing hard. Sometimes that happens."

The Red Wings took advantage of the second power play Toews gave them when Kindl sent a low shot to the near corner from the top of the left circle.

"We'd like to keep him in the box," Ericsson said. "He's not as good for them in the box."

Chicago had killed its first 30 penalties of the playoffs and matched the 2001 St. Louis Blues' feat of playing eight postseason games without giving up a power-play goal, the longest such streak since 1988.

The Blackhawks had a power play with 4:45 left in the game when Kindl was called for hooking, but they couldn't tie the game.

Crawford made 25 saves and allowed one goal, after giving up seven goals in the previous two games.

Howard was just a little bit better, earning his first shutout of this postseason and the second of his career in the playoffs. He has helped the Red Wings win five of their last six games since trailing Anaheim 3-2 in the first round.

"He made a couple of big saves there," said Chicago's Patrick Sharp, who had five goals in five games against Minnesota and only one so far against Detroit. "We hit a few posts."

Kindl scored his first goal of his first postseason to help the rapidly improving Red Wings pull within a win of their first trip to the Western Conference finals since 2009 when they got past Chicago and went on to lose Game 7 in a Stanley Cup finals rematch against Pittsburgh.

"Biggest goal of my life so far," Kindl said.

Toews has gone 10 postseason games without a goal ? dating to last year's playoffs ? in what is the longest scoring skid for a former Conn Smythe winner since Claude Lemieux went 20 games without a goal from 2000 through 2009, according to STATS.

Toews, who has three goals in his last 30 playoff games, broke a tie for his second longest streak without a goal in the postseason and trails his 14-game skid that spanned 2010 and 2011.

Chicago coach Joel Quenneville insisted Toews, who he put on a line with Patrick Kane, is doing a lot of things and isn't the only one struggling to score.

"We just have to find a way to get more about of everybody," Quenneville said.

NOTES: Since winning the Stanley Cup in 2010, Chicago has lost in the first round twice and is a loss away from a second-round exit. ...... Chicago hadn't given up a power-play goal since April 22. ... Detroit D Danny DeKeyser, who broke his right thumb in the first round and was ruled out for the playoffs, said he is holding out hope that he can come back if his teammates can advance.

Perfect skin: More touchy-feely robots

May 24, 2013 ? Robots could become a lot more 'sensitive' thanks to new artificial skins and sensor technologies developed by European scientists. Leading to better robotic platforms that could one day be used in industry, hospitals and even at home.

The new capabilities, and a production system for building touch-sensitivity into different robots, will improve the way robots work in unconstrained settings, as well as their ability to communicate and cooperate with each other and with humans.

The EU-funded project 'Skin-based technologies and capabilities for safe, autonomous and interactive robots' (ROBOSKIN) developed new sensor technologies and management systems which give robots an artificial sense of touch -- until now an elusive quality in robotics.

According to the partners behind the research from Italy, Switzerland and the UK, it was important to create cognitive mechanisms that use tactile feedback (the sense of 'touch' or 'feel') and behaviour to make sure human-robot interaction is safe and effective for the envisaged future applications.

The artificial skin is modelled largely on real skin, which has a tiny network of nerves that sense or feel changes like hot/cold or rough/smooth. In this case, the electronic sensors collect this so-called 'tactile data' and process it using application software which has been front-loaded to include some basic robot behaviours which can be added to over time.

'Here, we opted for programming through demonstration and robot-assisted play so the robots learn as they go along by feeling, doing and interacting,' explains project coordinator Professor Giorgio Cannata of Genoa University, Italy.

'We had to generate a degree of awareness in the robots to help them react to tactile events and physical contact with the outside world,' he adds.

Kaspar the friendly robot

But robot cognition is extremely complex, so ROBOSKIN started with modest ambitions in lab tests by classifying types or degrees of touch. They created a geometric mapping using continuous contact between the test robot and the environment to build a 'body representation' -- parameters by which data can be assimilated by the robot into behaviour.

Outside the lab, on the other hand, ROBOSKIN sensor patches were applied to common touch points (feet, cheeks, arms) located on the University of Hertfordshire's KASPAR robot, a humanoid robot designed to help autistic children communicate better.

'With our sensors, the robot could sense or detect contact and the data collected formed an important part of the contact classification we did -- the distinction between, for example, wanted and unwanted touch,' explains Prof. Cannata.

ROBOSKIN scientists explored various technologies, from the more basic capacitive sensors in today's sensing technologies, to higher-performing transducers found in piezoelectric materials, and flexible organic semiconductors.

'We'll see more and more piezoelectric materials -- which can act like sensors because they react to changes brought on by contact with an outside force -- in the near future,' predicts Prof. Cannata. But sensors using organic semiconductors will be the future game-changer, he suggests, as you will be able to print the chips on different organic materials like fake skin or bendable materials, and they will eventually be much cheaper to make, once scaled up.

Promoting the prototypes

The ROBOSKIN funded project ended last summer but the researchers are actively promoting the findings through scientific channels, including papers in 'IEEE Xplore' and 'Science Direct', as well as calls for interest in sharing their prototypes with non-commercial research projects.

Tactile sensors are not new by any means, stresses Prof. Cannata, but ROBOSKIN has succeeded in developing a production system for building tactile sensing into different robots. These unique methods solve the decades-old problem of adding more sensory perception to robots.

'We are still at the pre-commercial demonstrator stage, but the latest version of our tactile sensors clearly have wider potential in industry as factories seek safe, cost-efficient ways of using robots in closer contact with human workers,' explains the coordinator.

Patents have been filed for parts of the team's work, but they stress that prototypes remain available for scientific research work. ROBOSKIN technology has already been integrated into iCub, the Italian Institute of Technology's open robotics platform.

'The key was to ensure that our basic technologies would be compatible across different robotic platforms that may evolve in this fast-moving field,' notes Prof. Cannata. 'And this is what we have achieved.'

The ROBOSKIN project received EUR 3.5 million (of total EUR 4.7 million project budget) in research funding under the EU's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7).

Abundance and distribution of Hawaiian coral species predicted by model

Wednesday, May 22, 2013

Researchers from the University of Hawaii ? Manoa (UHM) School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) developed species distribution models of the six dominant Hawaiian coral species around the main Hawaiian Islands including two species currently under consideration as threatened or endangered. They found the order of coral abundance (from highest to lowest) around the main Hawaiian Islands to be Porites lobata, Montipora patula, Pocillopora meandrina, Montipora capitata, Porites compressa, and Montipora flabellata.

Environmental factors (wave energy, shape of the seafloor, water clarity, depth, rugosity (roughness of the seafloor), geological island age, and organic sediment content) are known to influence Hawaiian reefs. However, this is the first study to systematically examine the influence of these factors on the distribution and abundance of coral species across the entire seascape of shallow reefs in the main Hawaiian Islands (MHI).

"Average wave height and maximum wave height were the most influential variables explaining coral abundance in the Hawaiian Islands," reported Erik Franklin, lead author of the study and Assistant Research Professor at the UHM Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology. "Our models also identified relationships between coral cover and island age, depth, sunlight, rugosity, slope, and aspect (direction a slope faces)."

In general, coral cover was predicted to be highest in primarily wave-sheltered coastlines and embayments. Reefs with highest cover were concentrated in Kaneohe Bay on Oahu; the wave-sheltered reefs of Molokai, Lanai, Maui, and Kahoolawe; and the Kohala coast of Hawaii.

To construct the species distribution and abundance models, researchers integrated field surveys for corals (data provided by the US National Park Service and US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) with environmental data of wave exposure (data provided by UHM Department of Ocean and Resources Engineering), benthic geomorphology, and sunlight from 2000 to 2009.

Regional-scale mapping of coral species from these models provide a framework for population modeling and marine spatial planning of Hawaiian coral reefs. The geographic characterization of coral reefs would benefit greatly from the improved coral distribution and abundance information generated from coral distribution models. Data from these models can be incorporated into marine conservation plans or used for threat assessments to reefs.

"For example," Franklin says, "our results were recently used in the management plan review process of the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary as they considered the distribution and abundance of animals other than whales."

One advantage of this integrative, modeling approach is that researchers are able to consider a broader range of areas than field surveys alone and, therefore, can provide a truer picture of total abundance. "We were most surprised at the high relative abundance of Montipora patula which is currently under consideration for listing as a threatened or endangered species," reported Franklin. Montipora flabellata, the other coral species under consideration as a threatened or endangered species, was not as abundant as the other five species.

Franklin and colleagues are in the process of extending the modeling approach to include additional marine species in Hawaii such as reef fish and include additional environmental variables to try to improve the predictive capacity of the models. Ideally the results will continue to inform marine resource management in the Hawaiian Islands.

(AP) ? A Myanmar court sentenced seven Muslims to prison Tuesday ? one of them to a life term ? in the killing of a Buddhist monk amid deadly sectarian violence that was overwhelmingly directed against minority Muslims but has not led to any criminal trials against members of the country's Buddhist majority.

As the country tries to rebuild democracy after decades of military rule, the issue poses a dilemma for politicians who would lose support if they embraced justice for the unpopular Muslim minority. Opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who spent years under house arrest under the former ruling junta but now hopes to bring her party to power, spoke of the law but not of sectarian tensions when asked about the verdict.

At least 44 people were killed and 12,000 displaced, most of them Muslim, in more than a week of conflicts with Buddhists that began March 20 in the central Myanmar city of Meikhtila. A dispute at a Muslim-owned gold shop triggered rioting by Buddhists and retaliation by their Muslim targets, and the lynching of the monk after the gold shop was sacked enflamed passions, leading to large-scale violence.

While the violence is now contained, questions are arising over whether minority Muslims can find justice in overwhelmingly Buddhist Myanmar. Hundreds more Muslims have been killed, and tens of thousands have been made homeless, in violence across the country over the past year.

The sectarian strife has tarnished the image of Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace laureate who has been criticized for failing to speak out strongly in defense of the country's Muslims despite her long commitment to human rights. Her supporters, especially abroad, fear she is afraid to take a politically unpopular stand now that her party will mount a bid for power in the next general election in 2015. Prejudice against Muslims is widespread in Myanmar, and it is hard to find public figures willing to speak in defense of the Muslim community.

In a press conference Tuesday in the capital, Naypyitaw, she did not directly address the plight of the Muslim minority. Instead, she spoke in familiar terms about the rule of law when asked about the verdict.

"There is no transparency in Myanmar's justice system and there is too much influence from the administrative branch," she said, echoing the opinions of many human rights groups. "The judicial system has to be independent to be credible."

Suu Kyi has been criticized for failing to take a strong stand on attacks last year against the Muslim Rohingya community in western Rakhine state. Mobs of Buddhists armed with machetes razed thousands of homes, leaving hundreds dead and forcing 125,000 people, mostly Muslims, to flee,

When asked whether she was concerned about her reputation over the issue, she said she wasn't worried. "If I had to be concerned about my image, I should not have become a politician right from the beginning," she said.

The issue of ethnic strife also marred this week's Washington trip by President Thein Sein, a trip otherwise filled with accolades for the first leader of Myanmar to visit the White House in 47 years.

President Barack Obama praised Thein Sein on Monday for his efforts to lead his country back on the path to democracy, but also said he expressed concern to his counterpart about violence against Muslims. "The displacement of people, the violence directed toward them needs to stop," he said.

Thein Than Oo, a lawyer defending the men sentenced Tuesday, said one of his clients, Myat Ko Ko, was given life in prison for murder. Myat Ko Ko was also sentenced to an additional two years for unlawful assembly and two for religious disrespect.

Of the remaining defendants, one received a two-year sentence while the others received terms ranging from six to 28 years. Four of them, including a minor tried in a separate court, were convicted of charges including abetting murder. Two were convicted only on lesser counts. Mandalay Advocate General Ye Aung Myint confirmed the sentences.

"It's not fair!" shouted one of the convicted men shouted from inside a prison van as they were being driven away after the trial.

But members of a crowd of about 30 people outside the court house expressed unhappiness over the verdict for a different reason: They said they wished the death penalty had been applied against those who were convicted of killing the monk. Myanmar has the death penalty for premeditated murder, but the defendants were charged under a different murder category.

Thein Than Oo said he would await his clients' instructions on whether to appeal the verdicts.

The lynching of the Buddhist monk enflamed passions in Meikhtila, especially after photos circulated widely on social media of what was purported to be his body after he was pulled off a motorbike, attacked and burned. Monks are highly respected both for their religious devotion and as community leaders.

Entire Muslim neighborhoods were engulfed in flames, and charred bodies piled in the roads. The government declared a state of emergency and deployed the army to restore order, but the unrest later spread to other parts of central Myanmar.

In parliament in Monday, Religious Affairs Minister Hsan Hsint gave the official figures for casualties and damage from March 20 to 28: 44 people killed, 90 injured, 1,818 houses, 27 mosques and 14 Islamic schools destroyed. He said 143 people were arrested in connection with the violence, out of which 47 have been formally charged. Parliament on Tuesday formally approved the state of emergency.

The gold shop owner and two employees, all Muslims, were sentenced in April to 14 years in prison each on charges of theft and causing grievous bodily harm.

Hsan Hsint did not break down arrests and charges by religion, but no major cases involving Buddhist suspects have been announced.

Asked why only Muslims have faced trial in Meikhtila, Ye Aung Myint, the advocate general, said the courts were starting with the initial incidents that triggered the violence, and those involved in later incidents would be tried subsequently.

"There is no discrimination in bringing justice. We dealt with the first two cases and 11 more cases involving Buddhists will be dealt with very soon," he said, adding that about 70 people will face charges for murder, arson and looting.

Thein Sein's administration, which came to power in 2011 after half a century of military rule, has been heavily criticized for not doing enough to protect Muslims or stop the violence from spreading since it began with clashes between ethnic Rakhine Buddhists and Muslim Rohingya last year.

In a speech Monday at a university in Washington, Thein Sein vowed to ensure an end to the violence and justice for the perpetrators. He also called for a new era in U.S.-Myanmar relations.

Rights groups have criticized Thein Sein's U.S. visit, saying human rights injustices are still rampant in Myanmar despite progress made in freeing political prisoners, and in granting more freedom to political opponents and the media, among other changes.

U.S.-based Physicians for Human Rights released a report Monday detailing a gruesome massacre carried out by Buddhist mobs who hunted down and killed at least 24 Muslim students and teachers from an Islamic school as Meikhtila descended into anarchy in March. The report, based on interviews with survivors, accuses state authorities and police of standing idly by while the killings were carried out.

Richard Sollom, the report's lead author, called for Thein Sein to support an independent investigation into the killings and speak out more forcefully against anti-Muslim violence.

Tornadoes tear through central U.S., killing two

Storm clouds approach South Haven, Kansas, May 19, 2013. (Gene Blevins/Reuters)

Less than a week after a string of tornadoes killed six people in north Texas, a massive storm system that tore through the center of the country on Sunday spawned at least a dozen tornadoes, killed two people, injured dozens more and caused extensive damage from Georgia to Minnesota.

According to the Oklahoma state medical examiner, the two victims?Glen Irish, 79, and Billy Hutchinson, 76?were from hard-hit Shawnee. At least 39 other people were injured on Sunday, Oklahoma emergency management director Albert Ashwood said.

James Hoke, a resident of Steelman Estates Mobile Home Park in Shawnee, told the Associated Press his neighborhood "took a dead hit."

"My father-in-law was buried under the house," he said. "We had to pull Sheetrock off of him."

[Slideshow: Tornadoes rip through Plains]

A tornado at least a half-mile wide was spotted near Pink, Okla., outside Oklahoma City, prompting the National Weather Service in Norman to issue an unusually dire warning:

You could be killed if not underground or in a tornado shelter. Complete destruction of neighborhoods, businesses and vehicles will occur. Flying debris will be deadly to people and animals.

"Large tornado west of Pink!" a tweet from the Norman office read. "Take cover RIGHT NOW in Pink! DO NOT WAIT!"

"Overpasses are NOT tornado shelters!" read another. "Do not park under them! You are keeping others from getting to safety!"

Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin declared states of emergency in 16 counties. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said hailstones as large as baseballs were seen throughout the region.

According to the National Weather Service, more severe weather is expected in Oklahoma on Monday, "with very large hail, damaging winds and perhaps tornadoes impacting the region."

From the National Weather Service's Facebook page in Norman:

We are very concerned that we could be dealing with dangerous storms?possibly including tornadoes?around school dismissal time today, and certainly during afternoon rush hour. Please stay very alert today and think about how you might need to change your plans this afternoon. Please share this with your family and friends.

Videos of several tornadoes that touched down in Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri were posted to YouTube:

5 Types Of Fatty Foods That Are Good For You | Lucille Roberts ...

image

To a woman, ?fat? is a terrible word. Whether it?s on your body or in your food, it?s never desirable!? So much conflicting information has come out about fat that you almost have to be a nutritionist in order to make the right choices at the supermarket!

Are all fats bad for you?? It?s been the subject of controversy for decades?? most people are still flying blind when it comes to what?s in fatty foods. It?s tough because foods can contain more than one type of fat. In general, it?s all about picking good fats to help balance the bad ones. We know that saturated and trans fats will jeopardize your health and make you gain weight. Doctors now believe that you can be much healthier (and thinner) if you consume mostly unsaturated fats: monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, and omega 3 fatty acids.

Consumed in moderation, the following types of good fats can positively affect your diet, health, and, ultimately, help you live longer and look younger.

Foods Rich in Mono and Poly Unsaturated Fats, plus Omega 3 Fatty Acids

Both fats (mono and poly) have multi benefits to your overall health: lower the risks of heart diseases, reduce bad cholesterol levels (LDL), prevent the risks of blood clots, and due to their high ? diverse nutrient content, work as a vitamin absorption accelerator for the entire body.

Omega 3 fatty acids belong to the polyunsaturated fats family.? They are crucial to optimal brain power ? they protect you from memory loss, alleviate depression, lower blood pressure, and skin?inflammation.

1.?Vegetable Oils

Olive oil: this ancient ? miracle food is a considerable source of monounsaturated fats, particularly oleic acid, which is essential for cardiovascular health. The ideal olive oil should be cold-pressed, extra virgin, not cooked or heated. When used for cooking, be cautious with the heating temperatures ? it?shouldn?t?exceed more than 340 degrees in order to keep the nutritional value and to prevent oxidation, which creates trans fats!

Canola, sunflower, sesame, soybean, safflower, flaxseed, peanut, and grape seed oils: they are healthier alternatives to saturated, hydrogenated derives such as butter, margarine, lard, and tropical oils. For baking or frying, use canola oil ? it?doesn?t?become hydrogenated at high cooking temperatures. Flax seed and sesame oils are perfect to dress salads instead of reaching for commercial fatty dressings. Exposed to light or heated, some polyunsaturated oils such as flaxseed oil turn rancid ? that?s why after opening, keep them refrigerated and in an opaque bottle.

?Avocado Rock Me Fabulous2.?Filling Foods: avocado, olives, natural peanut butter, and almond/walnut butter

These are more than just simple snacks; they can be quite filling, and, when eaten in moderation, are quite healthy. Beside the beloved avocado dip, use an olive-tapenade dip or simply eat olives instead (an olive has about only 5 Cal!) When buying peanut butter, make sure that it?s natural, with no added hydrogenated oils. Almond or walnut butter is great too, and they both have lower fat content.

3.?Raw Nuts: almonds, hazelnuts, cashews, pistachios, Brazil nuts, and walnuts

All of these tasty snacks play a vital role in keeping you healthy from inside out; their high mineral and vitamin content is vital towards keeping you looking great.? One common one is Vitamin E, which is abundant in these nuts as wells in their derived oils. This fat soluble vitamin protects cell damage from free radicals and protects your skin from UV rays.

The best way to consume these healthy treats is raw ? the honey or sugar-coated ones can double the calorie content, so stay away from candied or sugared nuts.

?More stuff about nuts

- ?Walnuts are rich in omega 3 fatty acids, and are known for fighting skin inflammation and reducing PMS in women.

- ?Pistachios have the lowest calorie content among nuts: one has only 4 Cal and being in shells, the work will make you snack on less.

- ?Almonds are the leading source of vitamin E ? 1 oz. has 35% of your daily needs.

?seeds 14. ?Seeds: pumpkin seeds (known as pepitas too), sesame, chia, flax, and sunflower seeds

All of these should also be part of your daily diet ? they are great sources of fiber, omega 3 fatty acids, vitamin E, selenium and magnesium. It?s hard to digest the idea of finding so much good stuff in these itty-bitty seeds, which are so tasty, versatile, and crunchy!

- Chia seeds are the latest fad right now since they are being studied as a potential weight loss stimulant! You can toss them into a bottle of water, mix to form a dense gel which is supposed to expand in your stomach, keeping you fuller. Amazingly, 4 Tb of chia seeds has as much calcium as 3 cups of milk!

- ?You can toss these seeds into everything that your palate delights: garnish soups, add a handful to your salads, sprinkle on frozen yogurt and ricotta cheese, toast them, and add them to your smoothies.

5.?Cold Water Fish: salmon, anchovies, sardines, tuna albacore, trout, and mackerel

These types of fatty fish are rich in monounsaturated fats, but especially in omega 3 fatty acids. ?If you?re not a fish fan, you can take fish-oil supplements to absorb the healthy fats.

I still want to emphasize the fact that even those ?? healthier?? fats must be consumed in moderation. Be aware that all fats have 9 calories per gram, so control your portions! The American Heart Association recommends limiting even good fats to 20-35% of the calories you eat in a normal day.

Self Improvement | Brainwave Entrainment Meditation Versus Self ...

brainwavesBy John Vinters ?

Out of all the self improvement products, that are on the market these days, that claim to be the best for personal growth, the only one that seems to remain the most effective is brainwave entrainment.

To put it in basic terms, brainwave entrainment is the process of changing your brainwave frequency to achieve a desired state of mind. This is easily accomplished by listening to specifically designed audio recordings that are meant for a specific result. When your brain is introduced to an outside frequency, whether it be sound or light or any other source, it will adjust itself to that frequency. There are individual recordings available and each one is specifically developed with only one result in mind such as weight loss, or relaxation, or addiction help, or out of body experiences, and there is a wide variety of personal development categories that the brain entrainment audios are available for.

Over the years scientists and engineers have developed these recordings to work perfectly. It would be great if everyone had the chance to try out this amazing technology at least once to find out how it can help them improve their lives.

How does brainwave entrainment differ from self hypnosis?

One of the most important benefits of using brainwave entrainment as opposed to self hypnosis is that there is virtually no training required. To use self hypnosis you would have to spend a great deal of time learning and developing the skills that are needed. where with brain entrainment audios you simply relax, put on a set of headphones, listen and let the audios do their work.

Secondly, self hypnosis is kind of a general form of self improvement. Where on the other hand brainwave entrainment targets a specific concern. There will be a specific audio that is designed to target a specific area of your life that you want to improve. There is no guessing involved. For example, if you want to improve your concentration you simply choose the concentration audio, if you have an addiction that you need help with, you choose the addiction help audio, and so on. It?s as simple as that.

Best Practices:

You probably don?t even realize it but you are most likely using a form of brain entrainment every day. For example, if you listen to a particular song several times you are ?entraining? your brain in one way or another. The difference with entrainment for personal growth is that you are aware that you are doing it and you?re targeting a specific concern.

To get the best results and the most out of brainwave entrainment, you need to listen to the audios on a regular basis. At least a few minutes four times a week will get you the best results.

How fast you see results will vary from person to person and depend on the depth of the problem that you are targeting. It is possible to see results after only one or two sessions but realistically could take a couple of weeks. You just need to be persistent and patient. Good things will happen.

Things you should know about brainwave entrainment:

If you?ve been looking for ways to improve certain areas of your life then brainwave entrainment might just be the answer that you are looking for. It is a very simple yet very powerful tool.

Years of training are NOT needed to reap the benefits of brain meditation whether you are trying to lose weight, reduce your stress level, increase your energy or interested in things like astral projection, etc. All things are possible through brainwave entrainment.

For most of us our brains operate far below maximum performance. Using brainwave entrainment we can vastly improve our efficiency and performance levels.

Types of audios used for brain entrainment:

The two main types of tones that the mp3 brainwave entrainment audios come in are called ?binaural beats? and ?isochronic tones?.

There is not a huge amount of difference between these two. It?s mostly a matter of personal preference. Binaural beats work more effectively for some people while isochronic tones work better for others.

If you are deciding on which type to choose for the first time then I would recommend the isochronic tones as they have proven to be more effective than the binaural beats.

How to use the brainwave entrainment audios:

The biggest obstacle that most of us will have when using the brain entrainment audios is having the ability to clear our minds, relax and focus. This is key to having an effective brain meditation session. I can?t stress this enough. It may take you a few attempts to accomplish this but don?t give up. Stick with it. Be persistent and patient.

Find a nice quiet area where there will be no distractions and get comfortable and relax. Sometimes something as simple as just concentrating on your breathing can help you relax and focus.

Put on a set of headphones and let the audios do their work. If you are using binaural beats then headphones are required. They are not necessary when using isochronic tones but I would highly recommend using them anyway so that you get the most effective results.

Summary:

Thanks to the technology that has gone into brainwave entrainment audios, meditation has become a simple process that anyone can master quickly and easily. Years of training are no longer required. All you need to do is get comfortable, relax and listen.

This technology has real life changing power. It has been tested and proven successful time and time again and has been around for quite some time. It is also widely used by NASA, countless fortune 100 companies and by leading experts around the world.

I hope this article has been helpful and maybe answered some questions that you may have had about brainwave entrainment. Remember, if you keep doing the same thing, you will keep getting the same results. Nothing will change until you take some action!

The real beauty of brainwave entrainment is that you don?t have to spend a great deal of time learning meditation techniques. To find out how really easy it can be visit http://brainentrainmentaudios.com

Obama exhorts good deeds by Morehouse graduates

(AP) ? President Barack Obama, in a soaring commencement address on work, sacrifice and opportunity, on Sunday told graduates of historically black Morehouse College to seize the power of their example as black men graduating from college and use it to improve people's lives.

The president said his success was due to "the special obligation I felt, as a black man like you, to help those who need it most, people who didn't have the opportunities that I had ? because there but for the grace of God, go I. I might have been in their shoes. I might have been in prison. I might have been unemployed. I might not have been able to support a family. And that motivates me."

Noting the Atlanta school's mission to cultivate, not just educate, good men, Obama said graduates should not be so eager to join the chase for wealth and material things, but instead should remember where they came from and not "take your degree and get a fancy job and nice house and nice car and never look back."

"So yes, go get that law degree. But if you do, ask yourself if the only option is to defend the rich and powerful, or if you can also find time to defend the powerless," Obama said. "Sure, go get your MBA, or start that business, we need black businesses out there. But ask yourself what broader purpose your business might serve, in putting people to work, or transforming a neighborhood."

"The most successful CEOs I know didn't start out intent on making money. Rather, they had a vision of how their product or service would change things, and the money followed," he said.

For those headed to medical school, Obama said, "Make sure you heal folks in underserved communities who really need it, too."

Before Obama arrived in Atlanta, thunderstorms drenched hundreds of people who gathered on the campus lawn for the outdoor ceremony, forcing many guests to wear clear plastic ponchos over what amounted to their Sunday-best clothes. Rain began falling again, accompanied by more thunder and lightning, minutes after Obama began to speak.

"I also have to say you all are going to get wet," he said. "I would be out there with you if I could. But Secret Service gets nervous, so I'm going to have to stay here, dry. But know that I'm with you in spirit."

Obama urged graduates to "inspire those who look up to you to expect more of themselves."

Obama used the speech to once again share his personal story of growing up without a father, confessing that along the way he made unspecified bad personal choices "like too many men in our community."

"Sometimes I wrote off my own failings as just another example of the world trying to keep a black man down," he said. "I had a tendency to make excuses for me not doing the right thing. But one of the things that all of you have learned over the last four years is, there's no longer any room for excuses."

Speaking in personal terms as he often does when addressing predominantly black audiences, particularly of black males, the nation's first black president also spoke intimately of his desire to be a better father to daughters Malia and Sasha than his absent father was to him, and to be a better husband to his wife, Michelle.

He told the graduates to pay attention to their families, saying success in every other aspect of life means nothing without success at home.

"I was raised by a heroic single mother and wonderful grandparents who made incredible sacrifices for me. And I know there are moms and grandparents here today who did the same thing for all of you," he said. "But I still wish I had a father who was not only present, but involved. And so my whole life, I've tried to be for Michelle and my girls what my father wasn't for my mother and me. I've tried to be a better husband, a better father, and a better man.

"It's hard work that demands your constant attention, and frequent sacrifice. And Michelle will be the first to tell you that I'm not perfect," he continued. "Even now, I'm still learning how to be the best husband and father I can be. Because success in everything else is unfulfilling if we fail at family.

"I know that when I'm on my deathbed someday, I won't be thinking about any particular legislation I passed, or policy I promoted. I won't be thinking about the speech I gave, or the Nobel Prize I received," said Obama, 51. "I'll be thinking about a walk I took with my daughters, a lazy afternoon with my wife, whether I did right by all of them."

The speech was Obama's second commencement address of the season, following remarks last Sunday at Ohio State University in Columbus. His third and final graduation address will come Friday at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.

About 500 students received undergraduate degrees on Sunday and became "Morehouse Men."

After the speech, Obama joined about 100 people at a fundraiser at the office of the foundation of Arthur M. Blank, co-founder of Home Depot and owner of the Atlanta Falcons. It was the first of six money events that officials say he will headline for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, which is recruiting candidates and strategizing to keep control of the Senate in next year's midterm elections. Democrats will be defending more Senate seats than Republicans, including six held by long-serving Democratic senators who have decided not to seek re-election.

After briefly discussing the economy, early childhood education, energy independence, climate change and infrastructure, Obama said "the good news is we've got good, common-sense solutions that we can implement right now," on those issues. "The bad news is there's a shortage of common sense in Washington."

He told the donors, who paid anywhere from $10,000 per couple to $32,400 per couple to attend the fundraiser, that their support is important because it will help elect more non-ideological senators like Michael Bennet, D-Colo., "who don't come at this thinking there's just one way of doing things." Bennet chairs the campaign arm for Senate Democrats and introduced Obama at the event.

"That kind of approach, if we get a critical mass in the Senate, and we can potentially get a critical mass of folks like that in the House, means that the sky's the limit," Obama said. "Nothing can stop us."

Back Links Rules Have Changed in 2013 for Bike Shop in Indianapolis

The basic rules for writing online content in order to generated views and backlinks haven?t changed:

Rule #1 ? Write all of your content for the consumer of the content.
Rule #2 ? Rewrite to add the backlinks.

Both of these rules will please the Google Beast.? You must first feed it strong, healthy food, then you can add in the Extreme Moose Tracks.? For a while in 2010 ? 2012, this was not necessarily the case.? You could write, ?spell article by Bike Shop Indianapolis for bicycle riding around special gears,? and hyperlink Bike Shop Indianapolis to their home page.? Then you would merely place this sentence in an article, press release, forum,? and/or ?guest blog,? and Google thought it was just fine.

Now along comes algorithm changes Panda, Penguin, and Panda 2 and etc., and this same practice might actually cause the beast to eat you.? There are some new rules in 2013.

Rule #3 ? Don?t overuse the same exact keyword from the same source.?? We used to believe that you just needed to keep the total use of a keywords under 5% of the total on the page (or some other percent depending on which guru you were reading).? Now you can lose the value of keywords or even get negative attention if the keyword is overused even in the same website or blog.

Rule #4 ? Solve the overuse problem by using synonyms.? Google wants you to write naturally, and knows that good writers don?t use the same words over and over.? A good writer will say that, ?the bike shop in Indianapolis? was noted for providing great outreach to community groups.? The Indianapolis based bicycle retailer recently held a fund raiser to help the Tatum?s Bags of Fun charity.?

Rule #5 ? You will note in the above rule #4, that each link is to a different URL that the dealer hopes to help to rank.? In this case, one is to the website and the other is to the blog.? It would be easy to also point out that,T3 Bicycle and Triathlon offers many videos about road bikes in Indianapolis.? ? This link goes to their YouTube channel or could go to a specific video.? You can repeat this with individual blog posts, inside pages on the website, and so on.

Rule #6 ? Google also knows that good writers will commonly provide a ?natural? url instead of a hyperlink.? So they like to see variations in this theme as well.? ?Another way that T3 Bicycle and Triathlon reaches out is through their free bicycle tips section on their website at http://www.t3multisport.com/tips/cycling-tips-tp53/

Rule #7 ? I also changed the URL for this blog to have /Indianapolis-bike-shop appear first in the internal page portion of the URL.? Google looks at URL?s, and believes that what you put in the URL is what is most important to you.

Rule #8 ? I created a ?Excerpt? which is the equivalent in WordPress for the description tag.? This tag should be written as a teaser and have 140 characters or less.

The blog post above provided my client with 5 backlinks to 4 different URL?s with 3 different keywords.? And you?ll also note that one of the links was in the H1 headline.? The article sounds perfectly normal, not jammed with inappropriate or weird sentences designed to merely spam.

What would you add to this analysis?? Are there other techniques that you are currently using to provide great content, but that also benefit your sites with links?
