San Rafael students treated to traditional Chinese lion dance

Students sprang up to catch the candy tossed by the Oakland Police Wushu Team chinese lions in honor of Chinese New Year for the children of Laurel Dell Elementary School in San Rafael, Calif. on Friday, February 15, 2012. The team, headed by Robert Lee, who plays the drum, does performances by invitation only, was at Laurel Dell in honor of two students known to Lee. The 30 minute performance began with eight men doing acrobatic stretches including cresecent kick, step punch, cartwheels with no hands, and other martial arts moves. The Oakland Asian Youth Services Committee Lion Dance Team treated San Rafael students at Laurel Dell Elementary School to a traditional Chinese lion dance Friday in celebration of the Chinese New Year. The dance team was established 16 years ago in partnership with the Oakland Police Department as a way to decrease gang violence by teaching youth to work together.
