Arts and Entertainment,Celebrity Gossip News - Do you know the ...

I am doing an essay for school on philosophy, and I have chosen a specific belief system, however I do not know which philosopher/what philosophy this is. One of my best friends told me about it, and the jist of it is: Before we are born we choose the lessons we want to learn in our lifetime, and from our choices a higher being delegates what specific experiences we will go through in order to learn those lessons.

Can anyone help? thanks!

Kurt Leland sets forth your topic's system in "The Unanswered question: Death, Near-Death, and the Afterlife."
He has two other interesting books (he is a classical music composer): "Otherwhere: a Field Guide to Nonphysical Reality for the Out-of-Body Traveler" and "Music and the Soul: a Listener's Guide to Achieving Transcendental Musical Experiences."

Some similar wisdom and insight is given in "Testimony of Light," Helen Greaves, an excellent book. a similar book, "Expecting Adam," Martha Beck, gives a real-life example of a soul informing his mother in a dream before he was born, of his intent and "mission."

An even more explicit example is Free and Wilcock's "The Reincarnation of Edgar Cayce?" divinecosmos.com

Other research along these lines: "Reborn in the West: The Reincarnation Masters," Vicki MacKenzie, and "Life before Life," Jim Tucker, M.D.

C. S. Lewis gives a partial insight in his novella "The great Divorce," which, like Ann Ree Colton's "Men in White Apparel" and "Watch Your Dreams," describes the philosophy of development, unfoldment, learning, and restitution.

Four other authors deserve mention: Mark Prophet, "Climb the Highest Mountain" and "The Masters and Their Retreats," O. M. Aivanhov, "Education Begins before Birth" and "Man, Master of His Destiny," Paramahansa Yogananda, "Autobiography of a Yogi," yogananda-srf.org and psychiatrist Olga Kharitidi's "Entering the Circle" and "The Master of Lucid Dreams."

These contemporary authors, teachers, and seers ought provide some good quotes. two "religious philosophies" which teach this system are the Hindu and Buddhist. Yogananda's autobiography would be a good reference.

cordially,

j.

This I would say falls into the category of religion. I know it as new age religion. I am no expert on it but do know that it would be hard to find a major philosopher in the western philosophical tradition that comes even close to saying something like this.
Don

Not sure of a specific philosophical school or philosopher that believes in or teaches that, but I vaguely remember learning about this from my childhood when I was raised in the Mormon church. I was taught that we were in heaven prior to being born, and we chose what lives we would have ? our parents, struggles, lessons, etc.

You might want to look into that religion and see if the beliefs are relevant to your study at all.

that's what i believe in. but i just decided to believe that on my own. i don't think there are any philosophers who started that. but i could be wrong. u should do some research
