How To Improve The Energy Efficiency Of Your Washer And Dryer

Not every home improvement project requires a set of tools. There are plenty of ways to make your home operate at its peak simply by altering your practices. For example, your existing washer and dryer can become more energy efficient just by changing the way you use it. Not only should your energy bill be lower but you also may extend the life of these appliances.

Step 1: Wash only full loads of clothing. The washer operates most efficiently when a full load is washed.

Step 2: Lower the water temperature to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Just a ten-degree reduction in water temperature can reduce the cost of running the hot wash cycle by about ten percent.

Step 3: Do not over wash clothing that needs only a light cleaning. Select a shorter wash cycle for these clothes.

Step 4: Pre-soak clothes that are heavily soiled so a second wash will not be necessary.

Step 5: Experiment with detergent quantities. It is sometimes possible to clean clothing with only a fraction of the amount of detergent recommended by product manufacturers.

Step 6: Run clean wash through an additional spin cycle to remove more water. This results in less drying time.

Step 7: Use the correct dryer setting for the clothing. Lighter fabrics can be dried with the permanent press or delicate cycle that uses less energy.

Step 8: Drying time and dryer wear and tear are reduced when air flows properly through the dryer. Clean the lint filter after each dryer cycle.

Step 9: When multiple wash loads are being dried, first dry the lighter garments. Residual heat after this load enables heavier clothing to dry quicker.

Step 10: Do not overload the dryer. This lengthens the drying cycle because there will not be enough space for clothing to tumble.

Step 11: Do not underload because this can also lengthen drying time. It costs about the same to dry a single shirt for 30 minutes as a full load for the same time. Without the full load tumbling effect, it can take smaller loads longer to dry.

Step 12: When drying a less than full load, add a clean, dry towel. This absorbs moisture and reduces drying time by up to 25 percent.
