Hair Loss Treatment Options

New hair loss treatment alternatives are being discovered at an increasing rate. The driving force behind the search for these treatments is the need to find a low cost alternative to conventional treatments that is still effective. Of course, we would all rather learn how to prevent hair loss before it sets in.

Assuming you suffer no medical problems, your hair loss is likely caused by DHT, or dihydrotestosterone. Testosterone, the male sex hormone, is transformed to DHT by an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. DHT then blocks the blood supply to your hair follicles, killing them.

For anyone that wanted to stop or reverse this process, expensive medical treatments have long been their only option. Even then, positive results were rare. It seems that the world is never short of those looking to profit from the pain of others.

The advent of hair transplants made the treatment outcomes more certain. Even so, the total cost of treatments could easily surpass $20,000.00. Time, high cost, and general discomfort involved in transplants prompted the search for treatment alternatives.

For now, Minoxidil is the only OTC treatment for hair loss that is FDA approved. Beware of other treatment options that have not been subjected to independent tests from trusted sources. This doesn?t mean that you shouldn?t consider other options, only that you should be careful what you choose to buy.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This information is based on information freely available in the popular press and medical journals concerning alternative treatments for hair loss. Nothing herein should be or understood to be any type of medical advice. For medical advice the reader should consult with his or her personal doctor or other medical specialist.

Remember, too, that you may have another problem completely unrelated to your hair that is causing your hair loss. For instance, people that are deficient in vitamin B6 and folic acid will sometimes go completely bald. In these cases, using supplements to return the vitamin levels to normal have restored hair growth, as well.

There are some other things that you may want to try before spending your hard-earned money.
