Pesticide exposure increases the risk of prostate cancer
Researchers at the University of Southern California have found that men exposed to certain types of pesticides have a much higher risk of prostate cancer.? The researchers found that where these men worked and lived played a big part in their risk of prostate cancer.
The research was sponsored by the National Cancer Institute, the Department of Defense Prostate Cancer Research Program and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.? Researchers specifically focused on prostate cancer because this kind of cancer has very few external contributing factors.
The researchers analyzed data from the state cancer registry and recruited 173 senior citizens in Kern, July and Fresno counties.? The men had been diagnosed with prostate cancer.? These men were then compared with a group of 162 men who had no prostate cancer.
Researchers then tracked where the men lived and worked between 1974 and 1999.? They compared the areas where these people lived and worked, with pesticide use.? They found that men who lived within 500 meters of places that had seen heavy exposure to methyl bromide and nine other pesticides had a much higher incidence of prostate cancer.? The researchers focused their study efforts on the Central Valley, because the area has the largest application of pesticides, and also a huge population that is at a high risk from the effects of such pesticide exposure.
The researchers say that the study focused on residential exposure rather than occupational exposure, because earlier studies conducted in the Central Valley had focused on occupational exposure, and involved workers who were much more likely to have worn protective gear.
From this study, Los Angeles personal injury lawyers can conclude that the state is doing a very bad job of controlling the application of pesticides.? However, critics have had plenty of criticism for the study and the way it defines pesticide exposure.

Among the chemicals that are thought to increase prostate cancer risks are methyl bromide and other organochlorine pesticides.
