SKorea marks anniversary of NKorea's deadly attack (AP)

YEONPYEONG ISLAND, South Korea ? The mood is somber in South Korea as the nation remembers the North Korean artillery attack that killed four people a year ago and brought the nation to the brink of war.

Troops fired into the air and residents laid flowers Wednesday on Yeonpyeong Island, the fishing and military community that was the target of the bombardment.

At the National Cemetery in Daejeon, Prime Minister Kim Hwang-sik joined family members in bowing their heads in tribute to the two civilians and two marines killed last year.

North Korea launched the attack after warning the South not to carry out live-fire drills in their disputed waters.

Later, the military is due to carry out a drill involving attack helicopters, multi-rocket launchers and self-propelled guns.
