Step

The rear view mirror inside the car has to be removed. The two screws of the mirror base have to be unscrewed. Then the retaining block and mirror can be taken out by sliding.

Step 2
The windshield wipers have to be removed. They can be lifted into the cleaning position so they can be easily installed again. After doing this, a large flat screwdriver can be used to pry them up between the large nut and the arm while the arm is rocked with the other hand.

Step 3
Masking tape would have to be used to the interior heater vents. This will help in preventing any broken glass flakes from falling into the vents which could be blown into the car.

Removing the Windshield
Step 1
The gasket would have to be checked if it is still good. If there is no softness left longer in the rubber or if it has any cracks, then it would have to be replaced. It means that it can be cut away and the glass removal can be made much easier.

Step 2
A strong knife is to be pushed into the center of the rubber. It has to be made sure the glass is not struck. The rubber has to be cut all the way around for removing it. The glass can be now pushed out from the inside.

Step 3
The window would have to be removed with more force if the gasket can still be used. The glass sealant which is applied by the manufacturer has to be broken first. A wooden stick has to be run along at the meeting place of the gasket and frame meet.

Step 4
The glass would have to be gently pushed out with the help of the foot from the passenger seat. The glass should never be kicked. It should be pushed under the inside lip at the top with the wood stick for getting the rubber started through the frame.

Step 5
Help should be taken from someone else who should be on top of the car in front of the windshield. This person must catch the glass when it comes out.
Replacing the Windshield.

Step 1
Now the frame has to be prepared for re,installation. The rust has to be wiped out from the frame, the dashboard has to be cleaned and all sealant has to be removed from the new gasket. The gasket should be left in the sun for making it warmer and more flexible.

Step 2
The gasket has to be fixed on the windshield. A small bit of sealant has to be applied along the bottom of the gaskets half channel. The heavy side goes on the inside and the side with the slit goes on the outside.

Step 3
The petroleum jelly is has to rubbed on the outer rubber groove. A little extra can also be rubbed at the top and bottom center. Along the outer groove, a heavy nylon cord can be run beginning from the bottom center; a size of two foot long ends would also have to be left out in the center.

Step 4
The windshield has to be placed from the outside of the car. It should be made sure to lose cords are inside the car.

Step 5
One cord has to be pulled out slowly across the frame for pulling the rubber lip in place. The rubber can be pressed by someone else against the car for preventing the lip from slipping off.

Step 6
Any extra petroleum jelly left on the frame can be cleaned now. After this, the wipers and mirror can be reinstalled.
