'From Here to Eternity' to be stage musical

LONDON -- "From Here to Eternity," James Jones' 1951 novel about the attack on Pearl Harbor that was turned into the celebrated movie, is to become a stage tuner produced by Tim Rice and Lee Menzies, opening in 2012. Rice ("Evita," "The Lion King) will contribute additional lyrics to a score by new talent Stuart Brayson with a book by Bill Oakes. The production will be helmed by Tamara Harvey, associate director of The Bush theater, whose production of Jack Rosenthal's "Smash" recently played at the Menier Chocolate Factory. Fred Zinneman's 1953 movie version starred Burt Lancaster, Frank Sinatra, Montgomery Clift, Ernest Borgnine, Deborah Kerr and Donna Reed, and won eight Oscars. The original novel, which won the National Book Award for fiction in 1952, has just been republished in a new digital edition restoring passages relating to homosexuality and expletives to the previously censored text. Jones also wrote "The Thin Red Line," which was filmed by Terrence Malick.
